Looking for a neurologist to maybe help with a sleep disorder . Many years ago there was Dr. Tang Way but dont know of any one else.

Dr Tamayo is the only neurologist in Brandon. You will need a referral from your GP or NP to see him. His wait list is about 8 months.

Your heart is good?! It’s a 70 wk wait for patients needing a heart ultrasound! Saskatchewan same procedure 1 week! MB is in the stone ages and health care has been cut and fails us all miserably unless you have something immediately or urgently diagnosed that can be treated right in front of a doctor !

usually tackled by a neurologist. You should ask your GP to send a form to have a sleep study done. That's what my experience has been. When I had kidney stones out in 2016 one of the nurses noted that I had low oxygen and never slept for any length of time. Dr. Kassier's Physician Assistant, Maria, gave me an Rx to take to my GP who then referred me to the Provincial sleep study. Had it done in Winnipeg & found out that in an 8-hour period I was "waking up" every TWO MINUTES. Since then I've been seeing a Dr. Gianoulli in Winnipeg for follow-up each year.  
 
I also happen to go to Dr. Tamayo for treatment of chronic migraines with Botox injections so that's how I happen to know what he does or does not deal with.  
 
I would suggest therefore that you talk with your GP first.

Ugh. I had a Tonic Clonic seizure in February and after 3 referrals from GPs, I can’t even see him until at least end of December/early January.

I have not had a solid 8 hour sleep for almost 25 years now. When I go to bed at night my mind does not shut off for at least 3 hours. Every night!! I dread going to bed. Have tried everything. I have had threads on here before but nothing helps. It’s only a matter of time before I snap! Grumpy every day from poor sleep. Something is wrong with my night time biological clock it’s locked in the non night time sleep mode and can’t get it unstuck. I would give anything just to be able to sleep for one night but can’t. Pres:cription sleeping pills or suicide are my last two options. It’s that bad!

make an appointment with your GP & have a sleep study done!! I understand fully how it wears you down & makes you wonder about alternatives. It was miraculous for me to begin CPAP therapy & finally, after more than 25 years, get a good night's sleep. I was a complete zombie most of the time & it DOES affect your general overall health to say nothing about what it does trying to hold down a job.  
 
You may need to wait for the provincial sleep study just like with anything else unfortunately. To begin with I was given what I call a "take-home" test. You're given a machine which records your sleep patterns & these are analyzed. After that you CAN be sent to Winnipeg for a more in-depth sleep study at the Misericordia which is what happened with me. There is also the option of having it done at RANA on 18th street across from the funeral home but at the time (2 1/2 years ago or so) it cost $200. I got pissed off paying that price because it took 10 days for them to get back to me & I figured I'd wait for the no-fee, provincial study rather than a private company that couldn't seem to bother to listen to their voicemail. I got into that relatively quickly because I always ask to be put on a cancellation list. They can phone you up mere hours before to have you come in.  
 
I was extremely lucky that Maria, the Physician's Assistant, is very, very dedicated - without her strongly urging me to ask for a sleep study & giving me the Rx I'd probably still be walking around in a haze & struggling with health issues or even contemplating the walking off into the sunset scenario. So start rattling the bars on that cage & speak up because otherwise you'll get shuffled to the side!

whether you get referred right away. Before being diagnosed with a 24 / 7 / 365 migraine I was checked for a myriad of health problems (brain tumors etc.). It got so bad that I finally went to my GP & told her that it was like someone was smashing in the left side of my head with a baseball bat. She got right on the phone to Dr. Tamayo with no hesitation rather than just patting me on the head.  
 
It also depends on how severe your condition is. 5 years ago my husband was given 2 years to live unless he had a heart valve replacement quickly. This was in May & he didn't have the operation until October which is quick.  
 
Unfortunately, Dr. Tamayo & other specialists in Brandon DO have long wait lists because they're THE only specialists in the area. Face it, Dr. Tamayo, Dr. Kassier & other doctors in Brandon provide specialist services to an area from Swan River down to the US border and from the SK-MB border east to probably around Portage. PLUS any patients coming into emergency needing their expertise also need to be seen. So let's appreciate the fact they have a horrendous work load: bring a book, or knitting or embroidery or Sudoku & BE PATIENT!! I just make myself at home in the waiting space & enjoy some down time!!

I agree that a neurologist may not be the specialist that you need. Have you looked into a referral to the Sleep Disorders clinic in Winnipeg? If a sleep study does not find a problem, this may be the best place to be referred. There is a wait list, of course, but there is also an online program that can be done while on the wait list to see one of the doctors I believe.

Hi I saw your post about having troubles sleeping and wondered if you have ever tried passionflower capsules or tea? This works amazing to help me sleep. It's natural and I get it from hedleys health but in the mall. Something to try if you haven't?

Have you tried medicinal cannabis? I have MS and chronic pain in my legs and once I started cannabis before bed I have been having much better sleeps now, Sometimes I don't wake up in the middle of the night at all!

I second this I don’t smoke it I take oil before bed and it’s amazing how it works.. there are different varieties out there speak with your doctor. Some people still think of it as a recreation drug and think it carries a stigma of being a pot head but I believe it’s a better alternative to certain man made drugs.

I'm sorry you're going through this . I don't have any real advice besides something an acquaintance of mine does once a year. She has trouble sleeping sometimes too, I'm not sure the reasons behind why it's hard, but once a year she goes camping for 1-2 weeks with 0 electronics. Something about being away from society and that draw of cell phones or tv resets our clocks to a natural sleep-wake pattern. It might be worth a try, wouldn't that be pretty great if it worked!!

If your problem has been ongoing for 25 years why is a potential 8 month wait list such a big deal? Putting off seeking medical treatment for chronic conditions only makes it more difficult for people later on because they've waited until they can't tolerate it anymore before seeking help and the wait period is frustrating.  
 
For your benefit, I hope that your GP can provide some relief while you wait for your next step.

I also had a awful time falling asleep as my mind wouldn't turn off. I tried CBD oil about an hour before bed and have had amazing results. I can now go to bed and tell myself to relax and I fall asleep within 10 min. most nights. Has made a huge difference. I have had to different doses until I found the right one that helps me to sleep but I'm not tired in the morning.

In the 25 year period I have tried this: lavender pillow and spray, Totally black room. No electronics in the bedroom. Regular bedtime. Meditation, Cannabis Gummies and gel tablets, reading before bed time, background relaxing sounds, chamomile tea , Passion flower tea , warm milk, and 20 years ago I went to the sleep centre in Winnipeg for a three day study . They placed electrodes all over my body and then expected me to sleep like that . The results were intermittent sleep none of it deep sleep. They prescribed me some sleeping pills that made me feel even worse the next day . I sometimes can lay on the couch in the middle of the day and get my best sleep but at night time forget it . Going to see my doctor again today and see if I can get some prescribed Zippiclon apparently that works for some people .

If you are going today, ask for a referral to the clinic I posted the link for. You literally have nothing to lose, no side effects, no cost, etc.

Have you had your thyroid checked, could be overactive! Try not to take zipiclone, I tried that and it affected my memory, soon quit that! I take a calcium magnesium at night which helps somewhat!
