I live in the west end as well and noticed a similar "earthy" taste.

Both at work and at home mine tasted like this. It’s disgusting.

I was at a meeting in the Scotia Towers on Thursday and the pitcher of water that was supplied tasted horrible.

Seems to be all over the city .. downtown restaurants, north hill ones too housers in east and west ends too

We live on the north hill and nasty tasting water here! As stated above, tastes "earthy" or dirty. Sure wish someone from the city would comment as to what's causing this at this time of year.

That means we’re at the end of our water supply, you are now scraping the bottom of the barrel. I hope you like bottled water because that will be our only option til the world runs out of fresh water all together and we perish.

Those charcoal filters actually work quite well. The cartridges need to be changed every now and then though. Life is hard.  
 
The big asteroid or a massive solar flare will wipe us out first. The world won't run out of water.

When I had previously inquired (years ago) about a similar smell during spring, I was told that it was due to turbidity in the water.  
 
Basically, when the water is high and/or fast moving there's a lot more particulate in it that can't be fully screened out. It's mostly organic matter, which is why it smells like mould, or earth, or those types of smells.  
 
It's not hazardous as the water is still santized, but it *does* impact taste and smell. It will go away as the water levels go down.  
 
We do get it every spring, but it was especially pronounced in 2011 and 2014 when the river was in flood stage.

The water is always rather earthy if the river is high. But it's nothing a little cran can't generally cover-up.  
 
I still trust it far more than bottled. As far as quality assurance and safety goes, there is no comparison.

Can you provide sources for your "billions of empty plastic water bottles" and "1,000,000 bottles of water sold every minute world wide"? A proper source would be well researched and corroborated by multiple other research papers. Otherwise, this is pulling a Donald Trump, lets prevent that with sound numbers.
