knees

I've had some knee issues, as has my mother. First and foremost, we were told to lose weight, LOL. But besides that, our respective doctors ordered x-rays and I even had an MRI scheduled but ended up canceling it. The MRI was to see the cartilage, as it can supposedly tear, slip and otherwise get messed up as we age. I had popping with my knee, which may or may not have had pain associated with it, depending on the day. It was also swollen.
In my mother's case, she was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and other than NSAIDs (which she is allergic to) there's not a lot they can do for her at this point. My knee actually has gotten better, hence why I ended up declining the MRI as we were reasonably sure it was a cartilage. I did a lot of knee-stablizing exercises to help strengthen the ligaments around it and I'm careful not to reinjure it as it's not 100% (and probably will never be).
Hopefully that's helpful. Have you asked your doctor outright for imaging? A simple x-ray might tell you what you need to know, and once you have the requisition you can just go and get it done. Otherwise, you might just want to try a different doctor.
