Appliances can be purchased at Home depot so it can still be done if yours breaks.

You can still get appliances you just need to call and place the order in a different way.

I personally think greenhouses are essential but definitely should still be curb side. We have all of our seeds already and the kitchen table is full of ones we just recently started.

Money is and is going to be extremely tight for a lot of people. A lot will be trying to save money by doing their own gardening.

I am also not overly keen on the idea of farmer’s markets unless the vendors can be spread out a great deal. And hopefully people try to limit handling the fresh produce as much as possible.

Have been told by more than one store that appliance stores have been informed they will be allowed to be open after all. Province is expected to give an update at the 1pm briefing.

The province did in fact clarify this afternoon that Furniture, Appliance and Electronics stores may in fact remain open with social distancing measures in place:

vegetables are essential while flowers are nice but not essential. I'm still going to say that fridges are essential, I don't have a clue how I could keep milk at a safe temperature without a fridge. Maybe you can give me some tips?
I don't have a spare fridge or freezer, I am one that has to replace as needed.

Because Car dealerships are essential. I’m an essential worker in healthcare, who just needed to drop their vehicle off at the dealership it was purchased at in order to get an oil change and something else done. If i went elsewhere it would void my warranty. Someone who I work with vehicle just died officially on her. She needed a new vehicle and had to go purchase one from a dealership. People still need vehicles, and to receive services to their vehicles. Especially essential workers.

It doesn’t matter now as appliance stores can open under guidelines. You can freeze milk and thaw the bottle overnight in a sink of water. In a cool place it will be ok for a couple of days if covered. You could always put your milk jug in a cooler packed with ice in a pinch if the fridge went down.

Seems like Manitoba has done the right thing on shutting down non essential services .

my opinion of car dealerships being open. I haven't bought a brand new car for eons so I have forgot about the services that you take your car for. And yes a car is essential and having repairs done to our car this week past I certainly can agree on your points
I was mainly thinking about people choosing to test drive a car without a real pressing need to purchase one at this time of a pandemic.

I am still going to have to disagree with you on the fridge. If mine breaks down I want to be able to buy one ASAP!

Not Canadian, but what would seem to be a reasonable and realistic look via Bill Gates at the kind of temporary normal that things might be likely to settle into for the next 1-2 years. Key being a balance between having some economic activity but not via activities that pose a large risk of infection:

Looks like the Manitoba is following Saskatchewan footsteps. Saskatchewan announced phase 1 businesses to open up May 4th.(dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, opticians, podiatry, occupational therapy and chiropractic treatment). I also believe hair salons will be opening up as well.

MB going to announce their reopen phase steps next week and will be similar/indentical.

Article in today’s Brandon sun states Manitoba COULD follow Saskatchewan’s lead and re-open in 5 phases, the first being medical services. Nothing set in stone for Manitoba yet, but states May is looking like a realistic timeline. I’ll believe it when it is announced...

Just to be clear, nothing has been announced re Manitoba and all orders and restrictions remain in place. Here is the Sun story on possibilities around a potential plan that would resemble Saskatchewan’s gradual phased loosening of restrictions. Keep in mind that if/when something is announced, there's nothing to say that what we'd see here will be point-by-point the same as Sask. Would be keeping expectations realistic that I imagine "loosening" is the word and that a return to what was normal is a long way out:

Small request

While I have noticed that people, in person, seem to be remaining fairly nice and supportive to one another, I have noticed a significant turn online and in the paper lately. Pretty understandable that people's fuses are getting shorter and shorter while outlets remain limited and stresses accumulate. We are human after all.

I am trying to take an extra moment to respond when I get pissed off as I know the world circumstances are playing a part. My small request is that others try to think about that from time to time. It may help minimally or a great deal depending on the circumstances.

Remember that the reason Manitoba is doing so well is the sacrifices made by all of you. Short term pain for long term gain. Cheers

I’m still working full time. I am very thankful to still have a job during this time. 85% of my coworkers have been laid off. Here is the kicker, they are making more than me monthly on EI. I also have a teenage son who is making more than me on EI. I’m very thankful I can secure work during our economy but it’s alittle disheartening when not working brings in more money monthly. I do realize they will pay 20% back at tax time but it’s still discouraging.

The government announced that there's a top up coming for essential workers. I haven't heard the details on who specifically will be able to get it through

If you are not an essential worker can you please not go shopping on the weekend. Some of us are actually busy working all week and need to shop on the weekend.

I think there are a lot more “essential workers” working during the week than you think. Also consider one parent at home with children while the other parent is an essential worker means shopping is going to happen when the essential worker isn’t working so the rest of the family can stay home.

I didn’t get a chance to shop during the week so went to Walmart Friday night. I was shocked at the amount of people not social distancing, not wearing masks, bringing children (multiple adults so definitely someone could stay at home with them), more than 1 person per household etc. shopping.

Not to mention the people totally ignoring the arrows on the floors. Unbelievable.

NO one follows the arrows no matter which store your in and wearing masks is optional.

I went into Superstore today. Was able to fully walk in, no waiting, no one social distancing including their own staff that are doing mobile orders. I almost felt like the store was how it was prior to all this Covid stuff. Also what I feel is after they announced the provinces plan to reopen things.. the stores have relax quite a bit.

Yes, nothing is set in stone, but this is going to happen starting middle of the month or even sooner.

People were following arrows and wearing masks when I have gone previously. I usually go one night per week. So far it’s been great. Last night was the first time I was really not happy with those around me.

Social distancing is not supposed to be the part that gets relaxed.

To clarify:
-no plan has been announced. It sounds likely we can expect more details this week on what the weeks ahead might look like
-you won’t see the word “re-open” as much as you’ll see the word “loosen.” Re-open to some might imply going back to the way things were pre-Covid and that appears to be a far way out. Perhaps when they announce there will be some non-essential businesses allowed to open that are currently closed but you can bet your bottom dollar it will be with defined social distancing expectations.

Yes social distancing should not be relaxed.

Unfortunately, stores are relaxing or atleast feels likes it and just the discussion about reopening the economy is changing poeples opinion that everything is starting to become normal.

It will be interesting to see what phase 1 brings for Manitoba.
