And I am one of those people at high risk. I am 61 years old with COPD. I am a critical care worker. I have both of my shots now but I can still catch covid and I can still pass covid to others. That is a fact. I have done everything I can to stay safe and keep my staff and clients safe. I follow all of the health guide lines to the letter and then some. I have not had any contact with my family since this all started because of the chance I could pass covid to one of my family members should I happen to catch it. The other part of this is that because I do happen to have COPD my Dr. can not say how sick I would get should I happen to get covid. I do not get the option of not going to work. Because of what we do we do not fall under all the guidelines because we are classified as critical care. I want everyone who can to get the vaccine. I really do. Because we can not fight this alone. Its going to take everyone together to get this under control. If you had to choose to get the vaccine or watch someone you love die from covid what would you choose? To me, that choice was easy. I have to do everything I can to take care of me so I can do my best to take care of others.

How do I feel? Let me start by saying I trust the science and I am currently waiting for my turn to get my second dose. Anti-vaxers should not be treated as less than human. Doctors (like they have in other parts of the world) simply put will/would make a choice based on best chance at survival. Those are the ones that would get a ventilator: god forbid our system comes to that.

Everyone has a choice, I got the 1st vaccine, waiting for my second. I trust the science. I also love my rights and freedoms given to me by my citizenship. Treating anti-vaxxers (for whatever reason), restricting their rights, restricting their rights to healthcare...it's not right, not okay and in my opinion just pits people against each other and makes the anti-vaxxers just more anti-vaxx. We have not restricted rights, freedoms or access to things for people not getting any other vaccine, so why start with this one?

Because according to what you said about human beings... it's like people who 'herd together" with unhealthy lifestyles, high stress levels and poor exercise routines, it really sounds like you don't like any people at all, except for the perfect ones. And I'm guessing you consider yourself perfection then?

I used cattle as a proven and known example of how high a percentage of a population needs to be vaccinated to achieve true herd immunity, unvaccinated persons put themselves and others at risk at risk and could provide a reservoir for the virus to survive and create further new variants. Covid will very much be a part of all of our lives for some time to come and vaccination is the path to beating it and reducing unnecessary suffering and death.
Disease and virus risks exist in the environment constantly with new risks emerging all of the time. Animals or humans could live in a bio secure environment and disease risks can still emerge requiring treatment and vaccination.
I am far from perfect and have never claimed otherwise, I am just a simple working person like yourself trying to make sense of it all.
Don't forget that we lost a close friend living in a personal care home to Covid 19.
Sylvia could not protect herself and was scheduled to receive her first vaccination days after her death. Many others have lost friends and family to this virus and many more are suffering the long term effects of long covid. This is the reason why I am passionate that everyone able should get fully vaccinated and maintain that status with booster jabs in the future. It is the safest and most effective way forward and it is our duty to society and those around us to get vaccinated.

If you’ve no medical reason not to get the vaccine and you choose not to, and you’re endangering others then yes, no Covid treatment. The other things you listed don’t affect others health and well being, possibly causing death!

I'm being silly, I'm just pointing out to you that you seem to have little regard for people who do not meet your high standards. We're all just human beings trying to live our life. There has been other posts where you disparage people who "don't eat right" (according to what you put in your body), people who aren't physically fit, and last one you mention high stress levels?
A family member was a highly physically fit individual, he jogged, swam, rowing machine at home but he's in a nursing home now due to a major health crisis and he's not the same man as he was.
We need to focus on people and their worth and less on telling them how to live what is their own life to live.
And no I'm not talking covid related issues, just life in general.

The vaccine reports the province is putting out are super informative as far as vaccine deployment so far, intentions and goals, etc. I take particular interest in page 9 at the link below where based on a survey they examine different peoples’ vaccine intentions. Most recently 87% have said they’ve either gotten the vaccine or will sign up. 5% more have said they will get it but aren’t in a rush. That’s 92% that have said they’ll get it versus 70.6% that have actually gotten started so far:

The province has said 70% isn’t going to be enough and one can't help but notice that the daily percentage isn't going up as fast as it was last month. Folks sitting back and not getting their vaccine right now are potentially the difference here between this dragging on longer and from the community and province having wide enough protection that allows us to more or less moving on with a new reality.

An encouraging levelling off in cases seems to be in progress with the third wave, but seems to be a race against the clock right now to get not just the first but the second shot in a wide percentage of the population to prevent a fourth wave tied to the Delta variant. From this link, one shot of Pfizer is good for only 33% protection vs Delta versus 88% with the second shot (Manitoba is looking like it'll approach 20% with second shot next week):

With timing required between first shot and second shot, this is an ideal time for anyone that hasn’t gotten started to do so and allow time for the second shot before the Delta variant makes its way to these parts in wider numbers and tests what would be a vulnerable population by current vaccine rates.

I’ve seen some make the comment about denying health care for those that dont get the vaccine, but this is really about a much wider picture than that or any one person's health. We need a population with wide enough protection so that current and future variants can’t dig in and cause future crises in the medical system and future potential lockdowns. To get there we need more of the people that have said they’ll get the vaccine to do exactly that. There shouldn’t be a single person in this community that doesnt want us to have wide enough protection to hold back future waves of the virus and it’s not enough to sit back and hope that other people get us there versus doing our own part.

The public needs direction and focus, especially during these times when we are engulfed by the covid pandemic.
People always should try to strive towards higher standards in everything that they do. It doesn’t always work out as you may hope but you pick yourself up, get on with it and try something different.

Like it or not we are soon going to have some kind of vaccine passport at least for the foreseeable future which will grant those fully vaccinated against covid access to certain goods, services and travel that will be restricted to those without full vaccination. This will be introduced to protect public health while there is a serious risk of covid 19 virus and it’s deadly variants spreading .
To compare public health measures introduced in Canada to the totalitarian regime ruling China is naive.

A few days ago a leading doctor and expert in this field from the UK (cannot remember her name) was interviewed by the BBC and asked these very questions.
She stated that the immune response generated when one contracts covid 19 is difficult to quantify, can vary in different people and the immunity against emerging variants of concern is unknown. She said that it is also very dangerous to contract covid 19 in this manner.
She also stated that it is far safer to get fully vaccinated and that the vaccines produce a known and proven immune response against covid which is consistent and greatly reduces the risk of becoming seriously ill or dying if one does contract covid 19 or a variant of concern.
Being fully vaccinated also reduces the burden on an overstretched health care system and its workers and helps prevent spreading of the virus .

Isn't all that was mentioned not similar with the vaccine?

I find it difficult to believe that the responses of taking the vaccine are fully known either.

It's interesting that this doctor is so sure the vaccine has been proven, but a natural immune generated has not been proven. You would think the same effort should've been put in in studying the outcomes of both.

I don’t like that innocent people, men, women and children of all ages are placed at risk of contracting covid through the thoughtless actions of others. I don’t like that our healthcare system and it’s workers is over burdened and those workers put at risk because people refuse to receive a perfectly safe and tested vaccine.
The way to stop covid is through vaccination.

An example of why we're seeing petal to the metal this month in the vaccine campaign and caution with re-opening as we see the percentage vaccinated climb a little more slowly in Manitoba.

From the link below, Chile has a population at up to 75% with first shot and about 58% fully vaccinated. Chile is now having to put its capital city back into lockdown due to a big spike in cases that has medical system on the brink. From the link, the vast majority of cases are in those not fully vaccinated...

Did you watch the reopening plan that was announced on Thursday? Near the end, one of the reporters asked Pallister what would happen if we get to one of the planned dates and haven't met the vaccine goals. She asked if people who had received both doses of the vaccine would be allowed more freedoms. And he replied that if we don't meet the goal, we don't get our freedoms back.

too much power in the wrong hands. If he says no freedom back (he has his freedom don't kid yourself), he should be kicked out of office. People get vaxed not just for their own reasons but also so we can get back to normal as soon as possible. To have politicians turn around and say no to freedom, hopefully that would piss off all the vaxed enough to push back and demand our freedom back. If cases and deaths are low there is no reason to open up.

There will be situations in which we will be required to produce our proof of vaccination such as border crossings and likely to access to certain businesses and services. Services likely won’t be denied to anyone but those without proof of vaccination will probably experience some restrictions or be delivered services in a different way. I don’t like the idea but I accept that it will be a necessary part of life for a while to protect public health.
Don’t forget that once covid is finally under control we will likely be receiving annual booster shots for a while as well.
Make no mistake that lack of willingness by some individuals to be vaccinated or follow covid restrictions is already prolonging this pandemic and is causing further unnecessary suffering. Governments around the globe will be intent on stopping this as soon as possible.

It’s disappointing that after all this time and all of the information put out some still don’t seem to get the connection between a widely vaccinated population and a return to a more normal life. The data is clear… between current variants and the inevitability of future variants, there will be cases… a percentage of which will result in hospitalizations. As those ramp up, with an inadequately protected population the medical system will be overwhelmed and require lockdowns to prevent overwhelming of the medical system and deaths from Covid and so many other ailments that require hospitalization. If we meet vaccination goals, current and future variants are going to have limited population to do their worst in… resulting in less cases, less hospitalizations and opportunity to return to some of the pre-2020 things that as of now will risk lives.
To do as a couple people are saying and tie restrictions only to today's case numbers is to advocate for a future where we're stuck on a merry-go-round of on-again, off-again restrictions indefinitely. That approach seems to overlook that a big part of case numbers coming down in an under-protected environment will be those very restrictions.
The premier has made his mistakes. One doesn't have to like him or vote for same party in the future to see that he and health officials are absolutely correct in having the province tie vaccination rate to restriction levels. So many of us who are part of working toward a new reality where we have a more Covid-resistant population would be very disappointed if that wasn't the case. Thankfully the vaccine numbers continue to go up and we continue to march toward the goal but we need Meaningfully higher numbers than we have right now.

Any leader concerned at all with their duty to public health would make similar decisions .
Most of those that have or are getting vaccinated would probably understand this but at the end of the day politics is now not prolonging the covid pandemic . For the most part the pandemic is being prolonged by people that don’t want to follow restrictions or guidelines and don’t wish to be vaccinated. And that is sad because their lack of understanding and comprehension is causing immense suffering to others.

Our medical system was over capacity and patients were having to be transported to other provinces for care. It’s still stretched. We tragically lost a life right in Brandon of a patient who there was not a bed for that was having to be transported out of province.

What a small few are seemingly unknowingly advocating for is for that to literally be the cycle forever… restrictions, reducing case numbers. Reopening, increased cases, medical system pushed over the max. Restrictions, reducing case numbers. Reopening, increased cases, medical system pushed over the max. Rinse, repeat. The cycle stops when we have a high enough vaccine rate that the virus can no longer have that wide of an impact on us. We simply aren’t there yet but are being presented with a way that we can be.

It all depends on the percentage of vaccinated people as to whether everyone gets their freedoms back, specifically in regards to being asked about orders being loosened just for fully vaccinated people. Our whole reopening plan is just percentages for their first and 2nd dose. Basically, restrictions won't be loosened just for vaccinated people, and if the province doesn't hit the goal by the date given, everyone has to wait until we hit both the 1st dose and 2nd dose goal.

I don't think the July 1st deadline will be a problem to get the 25 % reopening. But I'm not sure we'll hit the 2nd dose percentages by the August and September dates.
