I would recommend finding a primary care provider (MD or NP) who is comfortable caring for someone with a mental illness. If your son doesn't have one already, you can contact Manitoba Doctor Finder for help in finding a good match. An MD/NP can help coordinate care, and ensure that other problems are taken care of in a timely manner.
I would also recommend that your son connect with PMH's Mental Health Services. There are mental health workers, proctors, people who help with medication reminders, and access to psychiatrists through this program. People can be referred by their primary care provider, or can self refer (just call Mental Health Services in the Town Center at 204-578-2400).
I am a primary care provider, who has had a number of clients who live with schizophrenia over the years. A psychiatrist is important, but only one part of the team.
