Breast Cancer walk?
1/21/2009 at 11:34 PM
I had to watch my mother battle against breast cancer for 8 years and lose that battle 2.5 years ago. 2 summers ago I was priviledged enough to do The Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Winnipeg. Those of you who don't know what it's about, it was a 60km walk over 2 days, had to raise a min $2000 to participate, was a very moving experience (13 million was raised-all of it stayed in MB). Now, last year the Cancer Society cancelled the walk, and I was very disappointed because they are missing out on literally millions of dollars, never mind the experience that all of us had, it was profound!
I know that there is the Relay For Life, which I participate in every year, but they don't raise enough money IMO, not when there could be thousands more raised, if the bar was set just a little bit higher. I am wanting to raise MORE money for the Cancer Care Foundation of Manitoba so that other people won't have to go through what I did, witnessing their best friend's death, and if someday another one of my loved ones or yours, are diagnosed with breast cancer, they will have a treatment and we won't have to say "they are fighting it", they will take some medication and move on with their lives, or it will be preventable so no one will have to even be treated. My problem is that I don't know what to do to raise that kind of money, I'm asking for your suggestions. I also remember when I was talking to Tyler Glen on Star 94.7 FM before the walk, he asked why we can't do something like that here, and I think that we can!!! Maybe not 60k, but something more difficult than 5km-that doesn't take much committment for alot of people. I am looking for something that will make people say "Wow!! That was amazing!!!" and bring tears to your eyes when you are finished because you worked hard for it, for those who can't fight the battle anymore. Let me tell you, for most people, a 60km walk takes time, committment, and support, and when it's done you feel proud of what you've accomplished. Especially if you've done it for a loved one, or in memory of a loved one. Please let me know if you have any ideas (walk, run, picnic, skate, game...anything) and if you know anyone with any kind of resources/connections to help as well. I think our little city can make a big difference and get put on the map for what we've done in the name of Cancer research. I know we've got the potential to do something great.
