Offensive Figure of Speech

When did describing something lame or stupid turn into, "Oh, pffft, that's gay.."? If I remember correctly, it gained its popularity with teenagers like myself (oh, for only four more months can I call myself a teenager.. sigh) about five or six years ago or so.
I really don't understand where it came from. Was it featured in some big blockbuster hit and from then on everyone had to use it in their vocabulary? Have I missed something here?
If I hear one more teenager, or anyone else for that matter, describe something they don't like or appreciate as gay, I'm going to give them an earful.
I myself don't see being gay as a bad thing, and take offense to it when I hear someone say it in a derogatory way. But perhaps my opinion is a little biased because I am a member of the gay community- does anyone else find the line to be either inappropriate, offensive, or hurtful?
