Head Lice...Dang It!!

I was going to braid my daughter's hair last night when I noticed she had some "hitch hikers"- nits. I immediately drove to the drug store, bought the shampoo, a bottle of tea tree oil, and clarifying shampoo.
We did the treatment, cleaned her hair, and stripped the bed. She slept on the couch.
My question is this: would using a steam cleaner on her mattress help in ridding us of these little buggers? I steam cleaned the mattress and sprayed it with a mixture of water and tea tree oil.
