I have an acquaintance who is really struggling with TMJ. Are there any formal or informal support groups for people with TMJ in the area?  
 
Surgery is not recommended for her and the recommended treatment is not covered through health. Any support from anyone who has been there/done that would be appreciated.

Hi there, I went to a dentist who made appliances for TMJ. You will get 2, one for all day that is kind of like a retainer that you wear even when eating. The second is for sleeping at night that pulls the jaw forward. I couldn't even open my mouth to get food in. He told me by 3 months I would be good as new. It took a bit longer, but it was so worth it. The dentist I went to is no longer in Manitoba, but I do believe there is one in Hamiota (I could be wrong on this so if anyone in Hamiota can clarify). Good luck. Oh yes, my appliances were covered 100% under my work dental plan.

I don't know if there is any groups but I suffer from it and found great benifet in physio, chiropractor and massage all with my at home stretches.... If they do not have coverage I believe these can be used at tax time ... At least the chiropractor or see if you can go on a payment plan through your dentist or any of the above. I know the at home exercises my dentist recommended help and I use them everyday took awhile but now it's a little better!

My temporomandibular joint (TMJ) also experiences pain at times. I'll wake up with my jaw dislocated sometimes and usually it will pop back into place, albeit painfully. Other times I've had to manually realign it forcefully with my hands. Ouch. I've heard mouth guards help but I've not sought out help down that path. Good luck

I also suffer from tmj and 8ts severely affecting my life . I also cannot have surgery maybe we can start a support group in Brandon because I sure need it

Dr. Steve Lawson in Winnipeg specializes in this along with Sleep Apnea appliances. No it is not cheap but I can eat and chew now. Was a day appliance and two for night that I no longer us. Actually, helped instead of still needing treatment. Health plans do not recognize TMJ or Sleep Apnea. It is to bad as we could be preventing a lot of other symptoms.

Yes I did go to Lawson for a consultation but am likely going to see Dr winch air as Lawson I cannot afford his treatment . This is great news that he has helped u that makes me feel better in making a decision of where to go for treatment thank u for the feedback

May I ask what company u are with for insurance. I can't seem to find one to cover my appliance

My wife had tmj, couldn't eat a sandwich. Saw Dr. Winchar at Edge dental in Winnipeg took a long time but hardly any problems.

His name is Dr Allan winchair in Winnipeg he is a gm dentist was less than Dr Lawson and has a technology to do bite tracking and tens machine on face. It's hard to make decision of who to go to be it is a lot of money either way :/ bit just want to make best decision. And I think bc part of mine is muscular Dr winchair will be the guy and was about 1500 cheaper
