I am looking for some advice from parents who have lived with their adult kids that have a mental illness. I am searching out options. We have an adult child with multiple diagnoses that is 18-he refuses to follow rules, will not help himself with finding a job or doing anything productive. There is no way to force him.  
He is also becoming more and more abusive and volatile in our home.  
What can we do? We have told him that he will have to move out if this continues (and it is), but short of having the police remove him, and he becomes homeless and broke-how can we manage?  
More than anything we would like him at home, but safety is a HUGE issue. I should also mention that he does not see any of this as being a problem.  
Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did it turn out? What did you do?

Sorry to hear of your situation. It is extremely difficult even if you have many answers and a great support team but almost unbearable if you don't.  
 
There are many variables to consider when making a plan.  
 
You say your son has multiple diagnoses.  
 
Are they current and competent?  
If so - Is your son medicated?  
If so - Is the dosage current and competent?  
If so - Is your son reliable with medication?  
 
If the answer to these questions is no and your son refuses to address things, you may be left with the option of enabling his behavior or keeping yourselves safe and hope that he learns from the harsh lessons the world will have for him.

Could you possibly get a court order for him to be involuntarily put into CAP. If you are afraid for your safety and his i'm sure theres a way. Maybe try calling CAP to ask what kind of options you have..

Go to the 7th Street Access Centre: they can help connect you to the people and resources you need. It will be good reliable help, free of charge and they will work with you, your family and your adult son.

We are looking for options and answers everywhere. 7th St access has been explored, but he will not go. That is the problem. You cannot force anyone into treatment or into attending appointments.  
I am just looking for reasonable thoughts and suggestions from those that have been in a similar situation.  
Everything is current as far as drugs, diagnoses etc, but no he is in no way reliable or able to take his meds without constant reminders.

I also advocate for individuals and families who are in your situation and may be able to provide you with many resources and connect you with our family support group. There are no fees - I am also available in my office Monday to Thursday. There is hope and there is help. I am very sorry your family is struggling, many of our families are in the same situation and we have a great amount of peer support.

You have not said what he is diagnosed with. Have you contacted Adult Services. They may be able to point you in the right direction.

Not knowing the mental issues you are faced with, it is hard to offer advice.
