Hi I am originally from the UK and moved to Canada in July this year.  
 
All summer long I have been bit by an unknown bug! It is driving me insane they are so itchy and uncomfortable.  
 
I spoke with my doctor and he just advised bug spray which I already have and use.  
 
Does anyone know how to stop or even reduce the bites as I am now starting to scar from itching them as they are driving me insane!!!  
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you still getting bites, or are just the old ones not healing because you keep scratching them?  
 
If you're still getting new bites, it's probably something indoors like bed bugs as most of the outside insects are done.  
 
If it's bites that aren't healing, try covering them (mechanically keep you from scratching) and try taking something like Benedryl to reduce the inflammation and get some relief. My mom really reacts some years especially to the sand flies, and that's about the only thing that helps.  
 
For things like mosquito bites, we always found rubbing a bit of liquid soap on the bite seems to help the best.

Two things come to mind as mosquitos are no longer around this late in the season.  
 
Do you think your home has bed bugs? If so they need to be professionally treated by an exterminator. If you own your own home you will have to call, if not contact your landlord.  
 
The second thing that comes to mind is scabies. This your Dr should be able to diagnose and treat.

We were outside Saturday evening shooting off fireworks and we got lots of mosquito bites. So don't think that's not possible still.  
A doctor should be able to tell the difference between mosquito and bed bugs. Get them to check.

They are still out because I caught one on my daughters forehead, just yesterday evening!! And now she has a huge welt where it was drawing blood from!

Try not to wear perfume or a high scented hair products or body lotions when spending time outdoors. The smell attracts the biting bugs.

Just had a mosquito in my vehicle yesterday. There are still plenty of bugs around.  
I would agree with some of the other posters about checking for bed bugs though. If you are constantly getting bites and don't know where they are coming from, that doesn't sound right. You would notice constant mosquitos or other larger bugs.

I have checked all the mattresses in my home and none have signs of bed bugs!  
 
Scabies wouldn't leave bite marks though would they?! These are big bites like mosquito bites.

I am wondering if you have any pets? If you do, perhaps they may have fleas and those definitely could be flea bites: sound similar and symptoms too. Check this out and get back.

Maybe try an antihistamine (like Benadryl) to see if it will help with the itching. If they are bigger they may just be mosquito bites (if you have been outside).  
 

When does these bites happen? Bed bites happen at night but not always depends how bad it is. The bites you described looking like big mosquite could be bed bug bites.You need to check more then your mattresses too. Check your box springs, couches, anything furniture with fabric with seams they like to hide there.And they also love wood too. I had a mild case of these little bloodsuckers and my ex had a bad case of the little bloodsuckers too. So I know a lot about them now.

i know for a fact bedbugs are hard to find. they are not always visible to the naked eye i would suggest you put a bunch of randsom tape down on your floors sticky side up leave it over night and then take a flashlight to the tape when you look i learnt this trick from the health inspecter when i almost moved into a place here in town that had them and caught them and refused to move anything in yuck

Well these bites happened late afternoon on Sunday.  
 
I had been to Winnipeg for the weekend and they only appeared Sunday afternoon once I was home.  
 
I never actually feel the bite however I definitely feel the after bite and itch!!  
 
How did you get rid of yours? Exterminator?

I wonder if it's because you just moved here. I have a couple friends who have moved to Manitoba lately, one from Australia and one from the UK and both of them react big time to mosquito bites! swell up and itch like crazy. Wonder if it's something like not being used to the mosquitos? They do inject a bit of their own saliva every time they bite and maybe we manitobans have a slight immunity built up after so many bites?

bedbug bite can take up to 12 hours to appear. if you were in winnipeg it could have been from there. i am praying for you that itgs not bedbugs :/ if it is then yes it takes an exterminator to get rid of them and several treatments. my best advice would to be to treat all of your things in a hot treatment and move as they are likley to come back. the only way i got rid of them was by moving. (my building had them when i lived in winnipeg 3 years ago) and the only way i got rid of them was to move.

bedbug bites take a few weeks to go away unlike misquito bits that are gone in a few days. bedbug bites are usually hard and bright pink. and there is always multiple bites maybe google them to see and compare

Iv been bit twice this year by a deer fly ( that's what my grandma called it anyways ) and I started to swell right up fast around the sight and had to take benydryl to get it go down and stop the itching. Still 1 and a half months after the one bite it still gets itchy. But it's also where my flip flops run on my foot so that could be why but they do stay itchy for a really long time!

did you rule them out at all?

Is it at all possible that what you are experiencing are not bites at all, but hives from an allergy of some sort? Being new to the area, it's not impossible that you are breaking out in hives when exposed to something new that your body has decided it doesn't like.  
Do an image search of hives on Google, they can look like mosquito bites.

Their K9 is trained to detect bed bugs through walls. carpets, floors, etc...  
 
I hired them, they are great and the dog is at least 97% accurate to 100% accurate compared to an inspector who is only something like 45%.

I did it on my own.Have to check everyday . I checked everything and killed the bedbugs when i seen them. I throw my couch outside but this was in -40 weather for 2 weeks that was the end of my bedbug experience they froze and I brought my couch back in.For my ex's I bought some raid stuff that worked for bedbugs and sprayed the crap out of a bed frame and everything else with wood. They were even in the baseboards so I used boiling water and javex. It is very time consuming but I got rid of them just have to be on top of it all the time

If it is bedbugs I would not use chemicals that you purchase (get an exterminator) as it will only scatter the bugs. Keep in mind they can be dormant I believe it's up to two years so you do want the residual that a professional exterminator will use.

my husband has had the same thing happen to him this summer. He couldn't go outside because when he came back in he was covered in welts. Didn't feel the bugs when they bit him either, only after. They even went up his shirt! Strange though is he is from England so maybe they just like European blood lol
