Quite the semi lineup along Hwy 1....
At the time the pic was taken a little after 1pm the road ahead looked crystal clear. By about a half hour later things got real and became the heavy blowing snow we have now...

This is the only province that I have seen close roads as much as they do. Why don't they salt or beet juice the roads instead?

It's also Manitoba's geography. With a north wind you get lake effect anywhere on that whole section between Brandon and Winnipeg. Plus, the escarpment influences it too (elevation change). And the Red River Valley (giant funnel).

You don't deal with those geographic quirks in other places that influences the weather like that.

I'm seeing about 9cm in front yard and back already, counting the little bit we got overnight Wednesday that hadn't melted. Driveway took a little longer to start building up but has started to pile on.
Already have had a couple of power flickers at our place.

Insanely heavy stuff to shovel already and its a weight that I cant see my snowblower enjoying if I just wait until the end and blow it out. Don't want to guess what we wake up to in the morning but its going to be a mess!

Hydro showing 90 customers effected on that one on their outages map. Map shows both cause and restoration TBD. I gather traffic lights at Waverly and Park have been out, assume in in connection. Hopefully doesn’t last long... keep us posted!

FWIW, it’s early and not sure what everyone else is noticing but so far where I am the snow hasnt started sticking to trees quite as much as the pics that have come out of Winnipeg and area. The North-facing windows on our house on the other hand are not like anything else we've seen from a storm...

I was noticing the same-the snow does not seem to be sticking to the trees here like it is in photos from further east. However, I picked up a pitchfork that sat outside for 10-15 minutes and it was sure crusted with snow and ice. Same with my jacket-an hour outside and I was soaked. The snow has let up some I think, but the stuff hitting me in the face felt like ice pellets.

Keystone Centre just announced that in the interest of fan and artist safety tomorrow’s “Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone” concert has been rescheduled from Saturday night to Sunday night, October 13. Doors open at 6, show starts at 7.
re things letting up, looks like we're in a lighter spot going by radar but another huge multi-hour blob doesn't look far behind. Hourly forecast as of now has snow right through til the 5pm hour Saturday and then flurries after that.

Great to hear re hydro! I see that as of now the outage map shows not a single one within Brandon, whether that lasts or not.

I’ve got about 15cm on average in front yard and back right now between compacting and whatever else contributes. About 10cm in driveway since it didn’t start accumulating until a little later and there would’ve been a little bit hanging around in the yard from Wed night.

Re sticking, there’s definitely some... my grape vines will make a heck of a pic in the AM and our house is coated. But trees on our street at least are nothing at all like the video the Weather Network is running of I think Winnipeg where whole trees are literally coated and branches busting under the weight. That could very well change with a slight warmup tomor?

On #1 heading west. Rigs stopped at intersection, some stopped by #1 & 250. The highways are very icy. Certainly low visibility. We decided to take back roads.

After looking again at the highway map, they had possibly just started the process of shutting down the #1 highway at that time and there was no accident (?). People were still driving west up to the stopped vehicles when we got close. We turned off to take gravel just before that intersection.

As of midnight, the highway is closed from Bdn to Griswold.

Env Canada saying 20.6cm officially on Friday. The prev October 11 record was 1cm. Your move Saturday, but safe to say the October 12 record of 1.3cm is also long gone.... be safe everyone!

That tries to go out in this if not absolutely necessary is taking a huge risk. Tow trucks were pulled off the roads last night and unless deemed an emergency by police they are not running. Road closures are all around the city. Can’t think any are going to be ok if you can’t get a block down the street without issues. Stay safe.

As of about an hour ago, even roads like 18th street that had been plowed were covered with a layer of ice. Hopefully that changes over the day with warming temps and more vehicles driving.

Via the city, snow plowing will focus on priority routes today. The snow clearing map is at https://snowmap.brandon.ca
Graders & loaders will be working in tandem along Priority Routes & a salt/sand truck will also be out on City Streets to address hills/intersections experiencing ice build-up. #BdnMb Transit services are running as per normal Saturday schedule, but expect delays! (2/5)

On trees, one thing you notice around town is that evergreens in particular are starting to have a lot of weight on them... case in point:
