I bought a Christmas gift at the Showcase store in the shoppers mall...It was not what the recipient of the gift wanted. I tried to return it to the Showcase store. They said "no returns" only gift card issued for amount. I said I wasn't advised of that when I bought it...He said "It's on your receipt "14 day returns for gift card only"..so really..once you buy it..it's too late, because you don't know the policy until you buy it....be careful if you buy an expensive item...

That sucks - maybe just give the gift card of the amount to the gift recipient and they can pick something else out at Showcase? I have found other places like that (i.e. Le Chateau), so now I always ask the cashier when I buy anything and specify "so I could get my full money back and returned to my card?" lol

Is the same way. You can't get your money back.  
You can either get a gift card or exchange

I always ask at the til before I pay-- "What is the return policy?"  
 
A gift card isn't that bad.

Aren't required to refund. Many only exchange. They also aren't required to tell you that. A good retailer will post their return policy. Be sure to ask before you buy.

I work retail and it amazes me how many people don't pay attention to the signs at the still stating we don't give refunds or the information on the receipt. If you're buying something for someone else, it's up to you to learn the policy for returning it. Just because we don't speak it doesn't mean there aren't ways you are notified.
