| | Oh Canada said "Adam gave the exact reason for demolishing part of the building for more parking. The Sobeys will focus its parking and front door to the north of the building . The new restaurant will build in what was the parking lot for target and will have the needed parking. As part of the development they need the supporting parking to support the square feet they are building as well as the traffic and parking they will need to support it .
To most people such a task of tearing down a building for parking is a big deal. To big developers it is like us playing with Lego. At the end of the day they get three major tenants that will boost the mall exposure and there incoming rent money. It will also ensure that the value of anchored tenants will be restored . The mall owners need the traffic to support the rents the small tenant pay in the mall vs being outside the mall.
Nice play by the mall not sure it could go much better. Most of the old Target location owners wish that their situation turned out this good. " |

If everyone is correct in saying Sobeys will be knocking down part of the building, then rebuild facing north....this may actually HURT the smaller mall tenants, as there will be no 'mall access' to Sobeys. I cant think of any grocer anywhere that has a mall entrance at the back of the store. Generally the coolers and storage areas are at the back.
As for the liquor mart, it can stay where it is as its independent from Sobeys. Its doubtful Canadian Tire will rebuild in that spot when they have lots of open space to expand. If anything, I can see a Marks/Atmosphere combo happening there....or, as has happened in several cities (Yorkton, Winnipeg), Save-On Foods has taken over Safeway and Sobeys sites.
