Renter's Perspective
3/22/2017 at 9:39 AM
I've been renting a few years now, with a dog, as a student, and with a small child.
A few things I've noticed - The rent never varies.
It could be a home that is falling apart, floors splintering, and water turns off all of the time. (I've lived in a place like this) and we paid 1200$ a month for this unit, plus water and hydro.
Where we currently live, we are in a "newer" construction condo, and only pay rent (1300) plus hydro per month.
What frustrates me, is that the "ghetto" kind of places are priced at a point that isn't reasonable for the living conditions. But, as renters, sometimes we have zero choice as to what we pay, because the rental market is so out of control.
I 100% understand that landlords have bills to pay, expenses, etc, regarding their mortgage, repairs, and general upkeep of the home. But, if you are going to charge what everyone else is, make sure the home is up to par.
I've also noticed that a lot of us long term renters, we maintain a lot of stuff ourselves. For example - toilet seat broke, we fixed it. Had a shower head that was causing us problems, we fixed it ourselves. If it's little things, we usually deal with it.
Again, that might just be us a renter.
PERSONALLY,
I do not blame the landlords in any way. I wish the government would have more subsidies available for those of us who work and go to school, that can't afford mortgages. Everything out there is only if you don't work. And if you choose not to live on campus (or can't because you have pets and kids) you're told to shove it.
Alright, rant over.
