What are everyone's thoughts on a Man running a home daycare? This is not a sexist thing but an actual putting out feelers thing.

Would I take my child....... no........

I’ve worked in childcare settings for over 14 years as an adult and have had a home dc for the past 7. I have worked with only a handful of men as it is more commonly a field full of women. However, the men were all fantastic with the children! Men and women play and interact differently and some kids preferred the males.  
 
Now having my hdc, my husband is my backup provider and often watches the kids so I can go to appointments without having to close. The parents have never had an issue with this and know that he is fully capable of watching the kids when I’m gone.  
 
It is sad that men get perceived as the “strange” ones when they show an interest in a child but like an above poster said, there are many stories of abuse from female providers.  
 
A person with bad intentions is a bad person, gender doesn’t determine that imo.  
 
If you are a male wanting to open a hdc, I say go for it!!

In regard to Brandon needing more daycare options...I’m not sure I 100% agree with that though right now. Currently there are quite a few providers looking to fill spaces. Not enough kids right now to go around. It does go in spurts though!

I grew up being babysat by either my brother or male cousins. I think it helped me balance when babysitting or hanging with my little cousins as i can go from playing barbies to cars to any sport etc. I think it helps kids see balance and eqaulity in aspects of thier life.

Can you elaborate on why you wouldn't take your child to a daycare run by a man? I find it very curious that something as arbitrary as the sex of the provider would make or break your choice?

I guess you wouldn't be okay if your childs primary (k-4) school teacher was male then.

When my kids were in day care the husband would be there lots and took over when the wife had appointments etc.. and they loved him. To be honest I think they liked him more than his wife and to this day when they see him he calls them by little nicknames he gave them back then and they think it is awesome that he can still remember them.

Lots of daycares are girls only or boy only and even same age, so lots of options for a male run daycare.

My children,  
They attend a male run daycare. We’ve known the family for years. We support and champion for open mindedness in this era.  
I’ve advised him to document and document. His mother is also with him.  
 
Let’s put some things in perspective:  
I’ve had a female daycare provider slap my child across the face when he was 2 years old.  
I’ve had a female daycare provider use my son as a therapy session for her convicted pedophile brother who was told to stay away from children but she invited into her home and I pulled him out when we got a tip from others and I was scared. I reported them to the police.  
Let’s keep going with so called gender stereotypes shall we? I’m on a roll!  
I’ve had another female day care provIder hold my children hostage because she wanted extra money and after calling the police to have my children released to me she proceeded to rip up their art.  
 
 
So...  
 
My male daycare provider has been an example of adult stability, love, warmth and what a daycare provider should be.  
 
It’s unfortunate that we (when we were new) didn’t know anyone and had to feel out all these awful experiences until we found the right people.  
 
I’d never wish for anyone to go through our experiences with daycare in brandon. But what are you to do when there just isn’t enough? Can’t stay home when you are the main bread winner.  
We won’t be the only family with our stories not will we be the last.

Im not sure why people think genders should and do matter but i wish more men would get involved with younger children including daycare and primary teaching. Children do well and learn from variety so the more types of people that are involved with children the better our youth will be able to handle differences including different interests in different genders ect

see any reason why a man can't run a daycare. Men can look after children just as well as women. Other than the baseless fear that men are predators and should not be trusted with children.

I think it would be great! And honestly there are many kids that live with a single mom that I could only see benefiting from a male provider. My favorite teachers growing up were male teachers.  
Any person that is looking to care for children as a career that gets into it for the right reasons and has the child's best interests at heart are amazing and badly needed. Male or female. I think it would be great!  
For people that don't like the idea I am curious as to why. I do also think it would be amazing to have for those kids that do not have a stable male role model in their lives.

It's seems Grace has no reasons to contribute....

There will always be people who won’t send their child to a male provider for whatever reason. But that’s ok because not all families will are a good fit for all providers.  
 
Give it a try although right now there seems more spots are open than kids at the moment

Not all of us have the same life story, seems pretty harsh judging a persons opinion without knowing a persons life story. Most of our opinions are based on what we have experienced as an individual, that's sort of my take on opinions.  
As for a male child care provider, my "opinion" would be, sure why not.

Her husband and her run the daycare together. We need more men out there!

I think having a male care provider can be beneficial in a lot of cases, especially in a world where some kids don't get access to their fathers or other male role models. I don't think I would be concerned whatsoever if I was presented that as an option.

That goes for men and women.  
 
They need police checks, home safety checks, etc.  
 
If it someone you know. Ask for police check and vulnerability people check.  
 
You never know.  
 
And I agree. Male daycare workers is a wonderful thing. The sterotyof what s male and female can do needs to be thrown out the window.

As a male child care provider I think it’s great! I’m proud of my work, it means a lot to me. I provide an important service for my families / community and get to be my own boss. Plus, I get to work from home which is something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m in a good place.

I agree that's crazy! When our oldest was very young, we spent a lot of time in Children's Hospital in unit CH5. There was one young nurse that was a male. He was, hands down, Abby's favourite nurse! LOL He was truly excellent at what he did.  
 
But I do remember growing up in the early 80's my friend at the time, her dad was a nurse. I didn't believe her because I didn't think men were allowed to be nurses (I was 5 or 6 years old). It was only much later that I realized that he was indeed a nurse and probably a very good one, based on how he was with his own kids and the troop of foster kids that were coming and going from their home all the time.

What a narrow minded and archaic way of thinking...that you would decide that without even meeting the individual. Is it fair that people get discriminated against due to their gender?? Pretty sure that's a human rights violation. I'm sure you would be the first to lash out if you were ever denied a job solely on the fact that you are a woman.  
 
What are you going to do if your child gets a male teacher? Coach? Camp counsellor?  
 
I know men that are exceptional single fathers,coaches,teachers...and daycare providers. Honestly I think my kids preferred the men they had in these roles. Men have a very different way that they interact with children.

You don’t know what has happened to me in my life or family. I should be entitled to chime in. I didn’t say anything good or bad about a gentleman doing this for a living. All I said was no it’s NOT for me.

I'd gladly have my kid in a daycare run by men or women. Both genders can be great childcare providers! Today the stigma against men in this work field is slowly dying, too, thankfully.  
 
And everyone knows we can always use more daycares. lol

Our Kids have been going to a daycare that is run by a male and his mother for a while now. We could not be any happier with our decision.  
 
Our children absolutely ADORE both of them. Our kids go on more outtings then one can even imagine. I love getting text photo updates from their travels to the library, fire hall, spray parks, parks, just4kids and the list goes on and on.  
 
We actually turned two subsidized daycare spots in a large licensed facility because we just didn’t think our kids would have the same individual attention and experiences.  
 
I am happy that I am teaching my children that we don’t live in a “pink hat”, “blue hat” job world.  
 
I am so thankful that my children have strong male role models in their father, grandparents and daycare provider!  
 
More important to us is that our daycare providers help our kids to learn and grow. We are a team, our daycare providers are a large part of our children’s life, they are like an extended family. It’s great when we have “issues” like behaviour that we can all sit down and come up with a game plan that is consistent from daycare to home.  
 
Really, all of the things we love about our home daycare, none of them matter at all that our providers are male or female.  
 
Any daycare provider should provide criminal/adult/child abuse checks.

When my daughter was younger, she was in IMO the best day care ever. They had a outdoor and nature policy, having natural things to play on where possible, rather than play structures. They had some of the best workers, and we, and my daughter loved it. It was (and still is I believe) run by a male. Note, this was not in Brandon. Some of the workers were male as well, and all, male and female were amazing!
