With the weather being as it is, do you think it is a good idea to send kids to school?

If buses are cancelled my daughter is staying home

I'm a teacher in the Rolling River division and just got the automated call that schools in that division are closed for tomorrow.

I read they closed schools in The Pas. That's the first time they closed the schools in 30 years. Common sense would say just shut everything (including schools) but essential services down for atleast the morning.

The Brandon school division never closes, unfortunately. I wish they would close the schools. In dangerous weather like this, it's not safe to risk your life to get to school

have started posting closures, including The Pas (who practically never close). BSD has been very quiet so far. I know they NEVER close their schools (though the safety of this decision can sometimes be debated), but I can't see their buses running tomorrow at the very least.

as a parent you always have the right to choose not to send your kids. if my school dosent close mine wont go tomorrow either

No, I don't think it's a good idea to shut down schools inside of cities due to whether. If you don't want to send your kid or are unable to drive them, don't send them. But I live in the real world and I have to go to work whether the weather is extremely shitty or not and I cannot afford to miss because my kids school is shut down. Especially when they already miss enough Fridays throughout the year!

All schools in Southwest Horizon School Division are closed tomorrow.

I'm sure the school will be open but likely not the school buses. Parents choice I'm sure.

Brandon School Division buses will not be operating outside the City of Brandon for Tuesday, March 7th all day.  
 
Alexander School, École O’Kelly School and Spring Valley Schools are closed.  
 
Buses will be running within the City of Brandon. Attendance at schools is at parental discretion where travel is required. Please call your school if you are not going to be attending.

I fail to see the logic of running school busses in the city of Brandon. Does BSD really want children walking in a blizzard, I hope no one gets run over today.

So they close BU because they don't want adults to try and make it to classes but Brandon School Division thinks it's ok to send a 5 year old. Nice. Be safe out there today.

People are upset the buses are running, it isn't safe. Yet, we will go out on the highway.

Unfortunately some of us HAVE to go to work today. Be it for financial reasons or in my case I am essential services (health care) so I am thankful the school is open so my kids have somewhere safe to be. After all it is parent choice, keep them home if you can, I would if I didn't have to get to work.

With the heavy ice making roads so dangerous, Stay off the roads.  
Unless you need to get your kid to School.  
Go figure. BSD knows better than everyone else.

kids will go to school today, I have to get to work and take care of livestock to boot, so yes kids will be going to school.

I also think feeding cattle has to be done, but driving your kids into Brandon when the highways are listed as closed because of a blizzard might not wise.  
Read all the posts on here about stranded people. It's a blizzard and blizzards' occasionally kill.

While I may not have kids, I don't get the BSD decision to keep schools open as normal even throwing in the 'parental discretion' clause in. When I left work at 7:40am, the streets were not plowed. I nearly got stuck 3 times with my small car. The roads were obviously extremely icy. If ACC and BU closed, a bit common sense would say bite the bullet and close. Maybe its time for BSD to seriously consider the safety of well being of their staff and students getting to the schools safe and sound and not be a 'glorified babysitter'.

My kid is past school now but if I had one for school and the school is open they would be going. Just cause you have a small little car and it nearly got stuck 3 times my wife and I had no problems getting to work this morning. It might take 20 minutes to cross town instead of 10. It is an inside profession. I don't know about you but my tax bill keeps going up for these so called glorified babysitters so the least can happen is they show up for work inside a building and teach. In the parking lots I don't see a lot of small little cars at the schools.

My kids did go to school today, and honestly, I should have probably kept them home. Generally it is not too bad to get around, just have to go slow because it is so icy.  
As for getting stuck though, our school parking lot and the street surrounding were so bad that even large trucks were getting stuck.  
 
Life can't stop for a storm in most cases, but if you are able to stay home and don't absolutely have to go out, then it is probably wise to just stay home. Leave the roads to those that absolutely have to be out today. Just be smart.....
