Really? What I learned long ago from events like this? Carry a sharp pocket knife I can open quickly and defend myself and anyine or anything with me. It used to be nice when out riding if I knew my horse was one that would haul off and plant a hoof in a dogs head if the dog ran up behind. Very effective. Thankfully I do not have to walk my dogs in the city but rest assured I know how to defend myself against a vicious dog.

You can try and argue all you like...they are bred to attack. Golden Retrievers are bred to be retrievers, German Shepards are bred to be guard dogs, Border Collies herd...without training they all exhibit natural tendencies in the fields they were bred for. It's very frustrating to listen to the silly gun rhetoric about "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" and "Dogs are all equal it's the owner that turns them into killing machines" no...it is not.  
 
If they weren't extremely genetically honed to be very excellent killing machines, with a bite force and locking jaws and abnormal drive to continue the attack even after most animals naturally stop (because the threat has abated) then they wouldn't be sought after as fighting dogs.  
 
I don't understand the ridiculous defence of these dogs. Grandfather existing dogs, no one wants to take away a family dog...but the next one just has to be a Lab or any other breed of dog..there are thousands...just no more pitbulls. The world wouldn't miss em and as you can see from the picture I posted a few hundred families would still have their husbands, wives, children, parents, etc.

It’s literally science??! That doesn’t even make sense. It is either science based or fact or it isn’t. There is no literally.  
 
So if you say Pitbulls have been proven to be dangerous Dogs then you have to i:nclude some proof of that. I’d like to see that proof!

The great peraneese was the aggressor. Smh. It's not the breed of dog it's the way they are raised. Just because one hears of pitbull attacks more often doesn't mean that they are more aggressive as a breed. Ive been bitten by a Huskey, German pointer and a German Shepherd. It doesn't make any of those breeds worse. It's from not being socialized enough.  
ANY DOG can be aggressive if put in a wrong situation.  
From the article it says the little dog has died, and the other dog is in quarantine until it's fate has been decided.  
 
I agree the owner should be held responsible and the dog should be assessed. Hopefully the lady is going to be ok. How awful to lose a pet in such a horrible way. My heart goes out to her.

Pitbull type dogs were not bred for fighting, That's what people did after the fact when they saw what the pain tolerance was for them. also their jaws do not lock. Common myth. Pitbull types are the only dog that is ever reported by the media by name when it is an attack. Look at any other reports and the headline will always say "dog attack" when it is any other breed than a pit.

That is very unfortunate about the lady and her dog, but I fail to see how two off leash dogs are solely responsible. Is it not the responsibility of the dog owner to keep their pets in check? So we now have an injured elderly woman, a treasured pet that is now deceased and two other dogs that will likely be euthanized all because of a oblivious and incompetent dog owner .

That is not true, that other breeds are not named when they attack. This story is proof of that-the Pyrenees has been openly identified by breed name right from the very to. Many news reports about dog attacks name the breed even when it isn't a pitbull.

As a previous owner of Pyrenees dogs I am always shocked to see this breed as a house pet in the City. This breed is specifically bred for guarding livestock and can take down a coyote with ease. They are very friendly dogs but they have a purpose and as a house/City dog is one I would never recommend.  
 
I strongly believe these dogs should be put down. The owner has shown he/she cannot be responsible pet owners and the dogs have shown they can be extremely aggressive. What happens next time? The dogs get out and who is their next target? A child? I say let’s not give the owners or dogs the opportunity to make that mistake again.

So this could have been avoided had action been taken previously?! That is infuriating.  
 
I recently had a family member (child) who was bitten by a dog. Zero fault of the child 100% fault of the owner/dog. Had the dog been reported the day before when it attacked a lady the situation could have been avoided

As reported the Great Pyrenees was the aggressor and should be fully assessed or put down. For anyone who wishes to learn more about dog behaviours and how to safely interact with dogs check out dogstardaily.com. They have lots of articles on dog behaviour and focus on positive reinforcement for dog training. They also have a bite scale to determine when dogs are a danger to society or if they can be retrained.

I was referring to the headlines of the news. It's more sensational to bring readers in by using pitbulls. That is why the public perception is so bad regarding those types of dogs. If German Shepards were stated specifically all the time in the headlines when they attack the public would perceive them to be an awful breed also.

I know first hand that both dogs were aggressively attacking and biting the small animal and both should be quarantined. If they both are not already.

Pit Bulls are wonderful animals that deserve a chance to have a good life like any other dog.  
 
However, it’s important to remember that Pit Bulls are not just any other dog. They are a little more of everything a dog can be.  
 
If this is a repeat, i suggest the owner needs some jail time.

I respectively wish to point out to you that in all my posts I agreed with the general consensus that if these Dogs and owner were to blame that they be punished. I repeatedly stated sympathies to the victims of this horrible event. I posted at the beginning asking if we had all the details before judging. That was all.  
 
I love all Dogs and wish them all the happiest of lives. But that is not always the case when you have bad or ignorant owners. Also there are lots of misconceptions about dogs that people continue to hold. I am in favour at all times of educating the public on safe handling and raising of dogs of all breeds.  
 
Stop pointing the finger at me as if I was wrong. I wasn’t.

we always had Collie's on the farm, not as big as these. I always wonder why people would want these big animals in the city.  
 
Most of them also work and never have time for them anyway.

By law the aggressive dog that killed the little dog will have to be and should be put down. They will be waiting to make sure he wasn’t rabid

I agree with this! Dogs take the blame when the owner is the one responsible for the dogs.

Just heard on CTV Winnipeg the dog that was attacked was put down and the other two dogs have been put in quarantine and the owner of the two dogs has been charged for violating several by-laws and the fate of the dogs will be determined at at later date.

How incredibly sad and traumatic for the lady and her little dog. Innocent parties experiencing a terrible outcome with injuries when it could have been prevented with responsible dog ownership is upsetting.

At 81, this poor lady's little companion and probably something that kept her going, has now lost that "little piece of family", due to irresponsible people. So unfortunate.

All dogs learn anything they know from their owners plain and simple. The owner is the one who should have controlled these two dogs. If they can't hold their dogs. Then they shouldnt Own those dogs or be walking them alone if they were. Aggressive dogs should never be off leash. Owners mistake is written all over this. I feel sorry for the lady and her dog, i wish no harm on others or all animals. Few tips for people with large dogs. Walk them everyday. Always correct any outbursts of agrression( if youre too scared then obviously you shouldn't own a large dog). Dont yell at your dogs AFTER THE fact if they did something wrong. You HAVE to catch them in the act of doing something wrong for them to know why you are correcting them, anything you do after just creates anger in them BECAUSE they dont know why theyre in trouble e.g. you work all day and your dog makes a mess of the garbage or bathroom, THEY forget it after they do it. Dogs live in the moment. And especially bigger dogs, you HAVE to socialize them. Take them to a dog day care. Even once a week does wonders. If you cant do these things. You shouldn't own a big dog. Also smaller dogs bite people all the time, its just not reported because the bite usually isnt severe. And anyone that says "well a bigger dog has more power so its science they are more aggressive." Well regardless of all that. If you can Not handle a big dog then you shouldnt own one. Its a responsibility 100 percent. Own your resposibilites

That they take the pups and rehabilitate them and put them into the hands of a responsible owners and into an environment more suited to there needs as a breed. I don't believe they need to be euthanized. they just need the right environment and training support to fix the bad training they have had so far.

If you go to dogstardaily.com and read up on bite inhibition and the bite scale you will see these dogs are beyond rehab.  
A dog that bites but does not puncture the skin can be rehabbed. A dog that kills another dog or animal cannot and needs to be put down. It’s all about teaching your dog bite inhibition. Usually they learn this at the puppy stage. But it still needs to be reinforced by the human owners. A dog that has never been taught gentle pressure with the mouth as a puppy often will never learn it as an adult dog. These dogs can be dangerous.

As for that poor little dog, saying that it wasn't 'socialized', holy crap! Can you imagine seeing three large dogs coming towards you wanting to tear you apart?  
 
I implore people, please call ACO and report anytime you see a dog/s running loose!!

according to the link, there was the lady with her little dog and two other dogs that attacked.

The little dog passed away. Can't imagine how she feels right now. I hope the owners will be charged
