We’ve successfully introduced a couple of adult males into our household using the following method.
First, bring the new male into an enclosed room with a litter box and his food/water and let him live there for a few days alone so the cats can smell each other under the door. Once both cats seem comfortable, slowly start introducing them by opening the door a crack and letting them see each other. Once they get used to that and seem interested in each other, swap rooms, letting each cat go into the other’s space alone to sniff around.
Finally, let the new cat into the rest of the house for a short period of time, always supervised, returning to his room after his visit. Gradually increase the amount of time the cats spend together until they both seem comfortable. If at any time, there is a fight, start again. Hissing will happen. Make sure you have a clothes basket or box so that, if there is a fight, you can cover one of the cats while removing the other from the area.
I know this seems like a lot of work but it is worth doing it right the first time. Our boys are the best of friends.
