Guinea Pigs - to have or not to have????

Just wondering if anyone has any input on Guinea Pigs? My son is asking me for one and just not sure yet. I have googled them for care and we went down to Best Western and he held one and is comfy with it. But just not sure yet?? Any input would be great....or if someone has one that needs to be looked after for a bit...lol....
