Robin: A sad sight
4/21/2010 at 12:53 PM
I was walking my dog this morning when I noticed a robin hanging upside down in a tree near my house. It looked like his leg had become stuck in a branch. He was struggling to get free and another robin was flying around and appeared to be trying to help.
I went and got mt my ladder and my "branch loppers". I climbed up the ladder, managed to duck a few times when the other robin flew around me and saw that some string was wrapped around the robin's leg and the branch. I guess he intended to use the string in his nest, but somehow got tangled with the branch.
In his desperation to get free, he had chewed the bottom part of his leg off. There was blood all over the branch, his feathers and his face. Though he was frantic, I managed to unwrap the string from what was left of his leg (boy those bones are really small - thinner than toothpicks) and he flew away to under a nearby bush.
I don't know if he will survive or not. At least he won't be hanging dead, upside down, from a tree all summer.
You often hear how trapped animals will chew their legs off to get out of a trap. I saw it firsthand this morning.
Has anybody else had a similar experience?
