Thinking of getting a second cat

I'm thinking of getting a second house cat. The cat we have now is wonderful but he likes to be outside as much as he can and he doesn't have a very cuddly personality. For people who have two cats, do you find that they don't get along? Is it better to get a female if you have a male or does it matter? I am thinking of getting a 1 or 2 year old cat so that we don't have to go through the kitten stage again (as adorable as they are).
If anyone could give me some advice from personal experience that would be great!
