I am posting this as a result of reading a letter printed in the Neepawa Banner's Letters to the Editor. The lady who wrote it was born and raised in Neepawa and is now a posted RCMP officer in Shamattawa, MB, who is also an avid dog lover.  
She speaks of the problem in Shamattawa about all the freezing and starving dogs and pups in this isolated Northern Community. Due to the problem this community has no other choice but to hold a "kill day" every 2-3 months, courtesy of a .22. She has taken in as many as she can into her home to feed and nurture and is looking for homes. She has already shipped out 4 puppies to new "forever" homes - 2 in the Brandon area, 1 to Neepawa, and 1 to Portage la Prairie.  
Her long term goal is to have a band by-law in place restricting all residents to spay and neuter their pets, but fears this may be a stretch. It's times like this I wish I was a vet who could go and spay and neuter pets pro-bono, as I also fear that this goal is a stretch with the poverty and isolation that restricts the people living in this community.  
As for right now, she is looking for any supplies ie)food, kennels, bones, etc. There are people in the community that are willing to properly house and feed these animals in mean time but don't have the supplies. If anyone is willing to remove them from the community and give them a loving "forever" home that is also possible. She notes that it costs $80 a puppy to ship them from Shamattawa to Winnipeg.  
I am also a animal lover and it breaks my heart and sickens me to hear of all the suffering, as I look over and see my 3 dogs (2 which are rescued) fed, warm, loved, and sleeping on my couch.  
I wanted to help this wonderful lady for trying to do what is right by these animals by helping to get her word out.
