Homeless cat

There is a little grey and white male cat in my area, quite skinny and looks to be around one yr old. The tips of the cat's ears are missing and seems very hungry when put out food.
The cat has been around for about a week and tried to catch it tonight but couldn't, even with the food. Don't think it belongs to anyone but any recommendations on how to catch this cat without scaring it off?
