Hi just wondering if anyone has had there dog wake them up coughing. Our pit bull lab woke us up this morning coughing and it's mid afternoon now and hasn't let up . She has a little bit of stuff come up but not much . Web have two cats and wondering if she ate the hair on the floor from them . She's also a pup and 9 months old .

Couldn't say for sure but its probably something to have a vet look into for you, especially if its a cough that hasn't quit in over 4 hours.

If She's been playing with other dogs, she could have picked up kennel cough. It's a contagious virus that can be treated with meds from the vet.

Had this happen last year.. It ended up being that he had tried to eat some grass that had barbs on the end of it, and he had scratched his throat.  
We went to the vet, they checked him out and then gave us the A OK that he would recover in a few days. They gave us some pain killers in the mean time to help him with the irritation.  
 
I'd recommend that you make an appointment with the vet.

We tried to change to a Natural dog food and our dogs both started coughing. Went back to old food and coughing went away.  
 
As others have said check with your vet.

Will i took the dog to the vet and they said he has kennel cough. We had her for the first time at the dog park two weeks ago and the vet said likely got it then as it takes up to two weeks to catch it.The vet said it's going around the city now to.

Good info for people who take their dogs to the park!

My dog and my sons dogs have all had it. I suspect just from being walked - one caught it then the rest got it. It lasts about a week.

There is a vaccination for kennel cough, I had it done along with all her other shots, because I wanted to take her to the dog parkand I didn't want her catching any of the many illness's that can be picked up there and many other places!

A lady I worked with, her dog got kennel cough from a local kennel and passed away because it never got treated.  
We vaccinate ours since it goes in for grooming where other dogs are, and also goes to dog parks ..

Bordetella.  
 
My dog has never had K Cough since having this vaccine for past few years.  
Intranasal form is safest for your K9.

Thanks everybody for your stuff on this subject . I have owned dogs for over 35 Yeats and this is the first time it's ever happened to us . A real heads up poor puppy has had a rough night but gave her her Ned's again and is sleeping more now . Don't get me wrong I Love the dog parks just wish I would I know some of the stuff that can be spread fast . Next time I will get all her shots for sure . It's painfull watching a puppy suffer like that with a nasty cough

It's not even a shot - just a squirt up their nose! Simple and inexpensive, I believe $25 ish when administered by a vet tech. I think you can also administer it yourself, then you are only paying for the vaccine.

It's kennel cough. My dog got it last week, my friend's dog now has it too. It must be going around. My dog is on antibiotics right now and had been vaccinated. Just like a flu shot though......vaccine only works if it's the right strain. Can still get sick. Take your doggie to the vet. You'll get a week of pills and all better.

Also, most kennels now require you to have vaccine for kennel cough. There has been a large amount of young dogs at the dog park so be aware.

Daughter has a pug ,they thought it better one year to give him it in nose rather then injection... Big mistake I told her. Not as good as injection . He got kennel cough from vet clinic , after visiting few months later for another visit he got it then. They looked to see who was in office before them and low and below dog with kennel cough and they failed to clean it well before next patient .
