I don't have a cat, but after I got my dog neutered I just put a cone on him and he couldn't lick the incision or jump on anything. It's annoying for them to wear it, but the safest and easiest way to keep them safe after a procedure like that.
Also, with the huge cat population in Brandon, I think this cat would have very likely been put down if you weren't able to keep it. Declawing is obviously not the most humane thing to do, but if it means being able to keep your cat and therefore it doesn't get put down... I think that it's the best solution in this case. It was probably a difficult decision to put your cat through that, but it sounds like it was ultimately the best thing to do.
