Social Insurance Number over the phone - CRA
4/19/2019 at 4:28 PM
I found this notice when looking for something else. I guess due to all the CRA scams. CRA is not getting to the people they want to talk to as they are being hung up on. And emails are being forward to Junk / Scam.
Personally by phone I will still hang up. Send me something in the mail and I will phone you.
Send me an email that tells me to go to my CRA account and read the message.
On the phone sorry hang up.
As to that they might ask for your SIN over the phone or email. Sorry that number doesn't go any time over the phone and never in an email even if you were God himself.
When someone asks me for that or my name, and I have not hung up yet, I usually say well if you are from CRA you should know that all ready. Then hang up.
What to expect when the Canada Revenue Agency contacts you
Scammers posing as Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) employees continue to contact Canadians, misleading them into paying false debt. These persistent scammers have created fear among people who now automatically assume that any communication from someone representing the CRA is not genuine.
This tax tip will remind Canadians that the CRA does indeed contact taxpayers by phone, email and mail for legitimate reasons. The following tips will help Canadians identify legitimate communications from the CRA.
By phone
The CRA may
•verify your identity by asking for personal information such as your full name, date of birth, address and account, or social insurance number
•ask for details about your account, in the case of a business enquiry
•call you to begin an audit process
