Are you allowed to collect social assistance claiming disability while also getting disability payments from insurance? I was asked by someone without any form of social media if this is something that is/isn't allowed.

I was getting wcb and ei and one canceled the other out . But that may be a different situation. Best for the person your asking for call and ask one of them . Most cases if not then one will ask to be paid back . Best of luck .

So they want to collect welfare and disability? Almost like having 2 jobs. Except you don’t work.

Maybe I’ve got an understanding problem, but I see a big difference in the idea of can’t work, and don’t work. If you are disabled and can’t work it certainly doesn’t mean you don’t want to work. If a person has worked and been a benefit to society just doesnt seem completely correct to push them into complete poverty, a disability is not like retirement, you don’t get to plan for it, and if a person were to buy every type of insurance out there for every occurrence, you likely would be in poverty while working.

Yes, there's always that one person. Without knowing the situation, of course comments like that would be made. This man has worked his whole life but has an infection in his foot and can no longer do anything due to being in and out of hospital. This person has a spouse who is completely capable of working but would rather take advantage of him and his sickness. He does not condone their behavior and has tried to stop it, he does not want to be in trouble due to the poor choices of their spouse hence the question. We will be taking action but wanted second opinions on it.

EIA (welfare) Disability generally only pays if the insurance payments are less than what EIA Dis would be. If EIA is aware of the other income, and it is more than what the person is eligible for from EIA, they will not get EIA. If the insurance payment is less that what the person is eligible for from EIA, they might 'top it up' to that amount. A person on EIA Disability still needs to report other income they are getting.

If you pay into private disability insurance, you get it when you are disabled long term.

You are also paying at the same time into CPP disability pension!  
 
Double paying - so should be able to collect both.

CPP and Insurance companies have got together and you can not get both. You usually get the CPP and the difference from private which may be a few dollars.  
 
Keep in mind that private insurance is non-taxable if you paid the premiums yourself.  
 
CPP disability is taxable income. So in the end you get even less.  
 
so they get you coming and going.  
 
As you have paid in to both you should be able to get both.  
 
Long term disability usually doesn't cut in until 3 months so having the EI is good to cover that time but you can't have both at the same time so you have to ensure you stop EI before you start long term.  
 
Then after long term for awhile. The private insurance makes you apply for CPP disability that way they aren't paying you out as much as they should in the first place.
