On Friday I got into a cab at the rock and did not know what company it was. He drove me to the first spot and asked for money before I got out. I told him I'd let him hold my wallet while I went jn to get money. When I came out he was gone! All I remember is that the driver was Punjabi. How van I can I figure out what company itwas? I've called all cab companies listed in brandon and all said they didn't hear anything

So why are you trying to track him down?  
Was he was holding your wallet while you went inside, meaning he drove away with it? Therefore stealing it? In that case you should call the police.  
 
If he wasn't holding your wallet and just left before taking you to your next stop, then I'd say be happy you got the free ride to your first stop and move on.

Make a poice report. If you remember the tim you were picked up or approximate time provide that to the police along with the pick up and drop off locations. All cab companies should have records of their trips and if they don't want to provide it to you they will have to provide it to police. This cabbie stole your wallet plain and simple. This sucks and I'm sorry it had to you or anyone. Everyone can learn from this though and in future provide something less valuable as collateral since not everyone is trustworthy.

Let me get this right, you left your wallet with a stranger, and didn't even get a licence plate number?

I'm not judging but why get into a cab when you don't have any money. My second thought is, why would the cab just leave. You hired him and you owe him money so why would he just drive away without being paid. He has expenses and can't be driving people around for free. Just a guess here but I'd say you didn't have any money so you gave him your wallet and agreed to pay later, you just forgot.  
Again, not judging but don't get into a cab unless you have the cash. My recommendation is for you to Google Brandon taxi's and call around. There are only a few, and after all you owe them money. Pretty sure you'll get your wallet back...after you pay of course.

Absolutely, call the police. Better yet, turn yourself in. Failing to pay your taxi cab fare is a $298 fine.

Taxi driver didn't do anything wrong here. It's not a theft when you give him your wallet.

That’s a bit of an oversimplification Irie Mon. If I ask you to take a picture of me and you agree, I hand you my camera. If you then run off with it, that is definitely still theft. Same thing here IF the op is being honest and is remembering correctly.  
 
That being said, I’d be curious to know how long the cab waited before driving off. If it was more than a few minutes, he likely cut his losses and went back to work, maybe forgetting about the wallet sitting in his console. I’d also take a look in the snow where the cab was parked. He likely got fed up and tossed it out and left, haha.

But remember, if I take your camera and run away with it, yes, that's theft. But if you owe me money and say take my camera as collateral and I will pay you later. No theft there. That's verbal contract between two people, not theft.

How many times has the "phony wallet" scam been played on cabbies?

Had this happen to a girl leaving her cell phone with the cabbie so she can run in and get money. Well they probably waited 15 min and then drove off. The chick was pissed but hey to a drunk person they only were 2 min before the cab drove off lol. Called cab company cabbie was leaving it at dispatch office and up to individual to pick up and pay the fare.

couple things I see as really out there.  
 
give a stranger your wallet, you dont know his name, you dont know the company. he took you the first spot, where is that, a private home, or another bar to get money from your buddies??  
 
the cabbie, why did he not take you a bank machine to get money, not so easy to flake on the driver as opposed to a private home where you can just disappear.  
 
no money in the bank or no CC or debit, why did he let you in the car.  
 
how long were you in "the first spot" 2 minutes.... maybe more like 10 minutes.  
 
If I were a cabbie i would not be allowing people in the car with no money, unless I take you to a bank machine. never to a buddies house as you won't come out  
 
if you wanted to go to your buddies place to get money, i dont want your wallet as security, as there is no money in it, and your CC and debit are no good to me, I woud be taking your cell phone, your watch or coat. something of value that I could use and that you want back. so you will not flake on me.

I just don't get how you get a cab and don't know the company lol also how long did you keep him waiting because Friday night is super busy for them guys they ain't sticking around for you to pay your fare while there's more money to be made because you can find them still pay your fare, get your wallet, and he still makes money. But if it was like 5 minutes then yes that's a dick move on the cabbie but 10 minutes sorry man that's a dick move on your half.

This wont be solved with wild speculation and arm chair lawyers opinions until we hear the other side which I hope would be a sober opinion on what happened, picked up at the Rock Ill assume the bar and you did the right thing and didnt drive home Ill give you that, but your side is pretty veague leaving somthing important out I would assume so I eager to hear how this turns out.
