Does anybody have any information on whether or not a Citizen of Brandon can go to the river and cut/split the dead fall trees there? or cut down the dead trees around the river to use for their own personal fire wood? Is there area's or sections of the river bank trees where this is ok to do and not ok to do?

I do not see any problem with going on Crown Land and cutting deadfall. However pay attention with the strict guidelines regarding the prevention of Dutch Elm Disease.

You need the land owners permission other wise it could be a trespassing and destruction of property accusation against you.. As for crown land you might be ok to do so but best to check what area or location and who's authority governs that parcel of land.  
I'm sure if you contact a few tree cutting services they could steer you to free wood or post that you need wood and willing to cut, fall, load and clean up etc.

Might be good to note that if the riverbank areas that you wish to cut deadfall in is inside the City limits, you will have to ask the Roads and Grounds department for permission to access and cut the deadfall out. It might be left in place to prevent riverbank erosion from flood waters, and as such should be left in place.

I walked down by the hydro plant and someone has been cutting the deadfall there like crazy. If I had a truck I would go and cut some of the poles that are mixed in with the deadfall and use them productively rather than let it sit there.

If it’s on crown land you need to get a permit from natural resources on queens ave it will cost you about $25

If you don't mind a 15 minute drive, we have lots of dead wood in our bush. 18km WSW of Brandon (south of Kemnay).

The river wood really stinks bad when burning.

Some of the best wood I have cut is wood from river banks. Green wood is the best anytime, but solid dead wood is also good. The type of wood is most important. You can often find oak or ash along rivers. Prime wood both! Cotton woods or elm (illegal now) are terrible and will give off an odour while giving very little heat.
