There are so many lakes around Brandon, why cant Brandon have a decent well stocked fishing store. CT has lots of hooks, HH has Minnows JB has some really expensive rods. Anybody who has been to Cabelas or the Fishin Hole knows what a well rounded store has and it doesnt take up that much space, it just has a bit of everything.  
 
I wanted to buy a certain type of fishing rods, not expensive, nothing fancy,and not one place carried them.  
 
So Amazon got my money again and will continue to do so.

If you feel that strongly about it, you should open such a store. Why expect someone else to make this investment to cater to your hobby ?  
 
People also post asking why Brandon doesn’t have a water slide park. Why do people expect others to make these investments to match their personal wants ?

If you are going to order from Amazon why not just order direct from Cabelas?? My hubby orders a lot off their site and it comes pretty quick. He even said they had a deal on where it was free shipping on everything. Otherwise normally its free shipping over $99 I think he said.  
 
Brandon is too small to support a cabelas, fishing hole etc. That's why they aren't here. What kind of cheap not fancy rod did you want? I find it hard to believe you couldn't find that at the places you listed. Must be a very unique rod.

It does suck that Brandon is very limited to fishing equipment. I order everything of mine. Cabelas does ship as a poster stated before. Just sucks when you break your 1 piece ultra-lite rod that you can’t just go down to a store and pick another one up.

Or you go to a place and they don’t restock, obviously there are a wide range of people who enjoy this sport/ hobby. And the people who enjoy it are all ages ethnicities so really I don’t see why brandon doesnt. As for starting your own business the start up and knowledge needed to do so isn’t for any jo shmo can do. But if Dauphin can have a fishing store that must do well since Sticky’s is open most all the time unless he’s out giving tours, Brandon would do fine

How many people besides yourself would want this certain type of rod to make it worthwhile to stock? If you have been on eBrandon long enough you will know that Brandon is a cheap town. I don't know what our dollar store per capita is but I am sure we are up there. It would make no sense for a store to buy just a couple of each type of rod to try and cater to every market. For father's and mother's day I paid $400 for matching rod/reel/line set ups for my wife and I. I am hoping to get a good 5 years out of them. When I first moved to Brandon there was a nice fishing store closer to 1st and Pacific. I went there all the time. They closed due to lack of business. I would love a Fishin' Hole or something to come here but there just isn't enough support for the medium to higher end stuff.

Dauphin also has a very large lake about 15mins down the road. We have a dirty old river. Brandon did used to have a fishing shop I believe it was called jig n rig bait and tackle. Used to stop in there often.

Business was and created for just that reason, people want something, so somebody supplies it for a profit.  
 
Under you logic why should somebody build and invest in a grocery store just because you want to eat. Why should someone open a shoe store just because you dont want to walk around in bare feet.  
..... and so on !!!!  
 
If the stores had someone who was knowledgeable ordered equipment they would do much much better.  
 
 
Just wanted a trolling rod to pull deep cranks. Pretty standard stuff.

Jig & Rig used to be a private store in Brandon. Then they moved their stock to Home Hardware.  
 
You would certainly need to sell more than fishing supplies to make a business work. How many jigs can you really sell?

You wont understand the needs of a fisherman anyway. Everyone assumes u can pick up any old rod and any old line with some crappy swimbait and all is good. Nooooope. I know i myself takes pride in fishing. Use top of the line equipment for two reasons. It lasts and I believe it certainly helps when loading up on a trophy.

I dont think you realize how wide spread the fishing industry is.

This is just an estimate on what i have,  
 
Around 25 rods and reels 26 rods now, likely over one thousand lures, $7000 grand in electronics, likely another 3000 grand in other stuff like knives gloves nets ect ect  
 
And i am always looking to buy more, then there is ice fishing. And there are many many many guys just like myself.If a store carries the right stuff they could do very well.

I use only G loomis and Okuma rods. Plain and simple. Go big or go home. St croix is also another great rod but i myself dont use. Yes lures especially rapala cranks and soft plastics they sure add up quick! I mainly fish walleye and pike. But also do a fair share of lake and rainbow trout fishing. I spent 56,000 on a boat. 20' lund sport angler and a 200 horse merc verado! Hell of a boat. I love it. I dont even wanna get started on what fishing sets me back. But ya know what. I love it, thats my hobbie.

We have a seasonal trailer at Lake of The Praires at Ricker's Campground, where we go every weekend fishing.  
 
16' Aluminum Lund Boat, front and back trolling motors, front and back fish finders, bunk trailer, Honda 90 motor, more gizmos and gadgets.  
 
Master angler in pickerel and carp.  
12 fishing rods between hubby and I.  
 
But, I know a store selling fishing equipment only will not work in Brandon. Sticky does great in Dauphin, because he makes more on his guides and tours.  
 
I am not very well informed - sorry.

Contact Glenn for fishing gear. He is very knowledgeable and has tons of stuff. Not sure on rods but just ask

Hubby bought a $250 fishing rod 2 years ago. He loves it and has no inclination to buy another new one.  
 
So, if everyone spent that kind of money and bought what they wanted....well, they are not going to buy a new one every year. There are only so many people that would spend that kind of money on a rod. Therefore, him and others will not have to go to a fishing store except for some new line, etc. That will not keep a business running.  
 
Sticky in Dauphin by the way, has a great business partner.  
 
And you can't retract your sarcastic remark?

As far as rods go, yes i do buy new rods every other year because new models are coming out. I fish all different species of fish therefore i use a variety of different rods. Light, medium, medium heavy, and heavy for large pike.

if it was a money maker, someone would have a store here. The market here might not be strong enough for someone to sink money into it. I'm sure people have looked into it. Then to rent a place, utilities, and other types of overhead. Then to compete with other places that sell fishing gear like Walmart and Canadian Tire. You might not last long before your closing the store.

that is why we have so many between us?  
 
That is why we might buy different lines for different rods.  
 
Different reels for casting, trolling, jigging, but not every year.  
 
New models do come out and you may buy one every year, but that would definitely not be the majority here.

what some think about astronomy and telescopes. Sure you can start out with the cheaper stuff and do well. But once you get the bug, you then want to upgrade to more expensive telescopes and so on.  
 
Same is really with all other hobbies.

I never thought of it that way. Although I'm the type of person who always wants to find the cheapest way to do things.  
 
Gardening (my #1 hobby) - I try to do things without outside inputs, etc, it's part of the fun (and frustration). So other than time, it's very inexpensive. Same with sewing - I use almost exclusively remnant, salvaged and thrifted materials etc to make what I make, keeping the cost very low.  
 
But after reading this thread, if you're fishing in a variety of places and after different species I can understand how that can be big bucks as the different fish have different requirements. Same with astronomy, especially if you're doing the photography aspect.

Doesn’t even stock a ton of the gear. We wanted reels and rods and we were in Winnipeg and the salesman basically told us to order online and made it seem like we were wasting his time. And people wonder why brick and mortar stores are suffering... lol.

I would say that between Canadian Tire and Home Hardware, there are plenty of items to choose from. I fish lots, I shop online and here in town, and both stores collectively offer more than enough products. And for things not found there, order online. The big stores like Cabelas usually don't stock everything and will encourage you to order online anyway. Can be a bit frustrating I know.

Talk is cheap, Take your 3 lures and lets head to a lake of my choice, species of my choice and lets see how well you do.  
 
Let me know when your ready. Im serious and want to see you prove that. Unless you have an excuse now.  
 
By the way its Clear lake for walleye. So let me know when your ready.

If you can't find the tackle you need in Brandon, I would bet you can't find the fish either.
