Is Area Code 489 a Scam?
Had a text message from Area Code 489 wanting to buy a item
off eBrandon.
We have had a lot of scammers emailing or texting us lately for items
on eBrandon.

Is area code 289 a scam also?

I also have had text messages wanting to buy my stuff that I had posted on eBrandon. Wanting a handler to pick up stuff. It just seems so strange

I have had lots of stuff for sale on here, from a $15000 trailer to a $150 door. And got scam texts about it all. Look up the area code before you answer, as I get charged for international texts as most are out of the states. If it’s not a Manitoba bomber I wouldn’t answer it as it’s bogus.

Don’t put your area code on the phone number you list in your ad. Problem solved. Local people will know you are 204 (unless you are one of a few with the new area code)

More than likely yes they’re both scams.

I like to have some fun with them, give them the complete run around for as long as I can etc etc, but I’m kind of an a**hole sometimes.

According to our Western Mb large print phone book the area code 489 is a new area code for WPG.

Thanks for your interest in using the classifieds. As always, the litmus test is that if someone isn't able to meet you in person prior to any exchange of funds (no matter what emotionally appealing reason they give), the classifieds aren't intended for their kind of transaction. If you get a text from a strange number, tell them you're aware that scammers use strange numbers just like theirs and that you wont be corresponding with them further, wont be accepting payment and will not be sending payment until they have viewed the item in person.

Never give out personal, bank or payment information and never click on links sent in messages. The area codes for Manitoba are 204 and 431. 439 is Arizona. Previous poster will have confused with 204-489, which can be Winnipeg. But at any rate don't go on the assumption that now or over time a scammer wont be able to acquire such a number. When they do they still wont meet you in person to look at your item..

Thanks to all who make the classifieds what the are today. The site wouldn't be what it is without your participation on the buying and selling end and without your conversations with friends and neighbours to ensure folks know the telltale signs of less-than-honourable usage. Its been a great summer with over 15,000 ads currently live including 350 job ads right now and over 240 ads browsable in the Homes for Sale category. I look forward to seeing what the winter brings!

Handler is a scam.

Meet in a public place.

Only if a huge item then only give address if you are having someone else there.

Only accept cash. No matter what is said.

If really large amount. Meet at a bank with them and have bank transfer the money.

If not willing to do this then scam.
