Robert Altemeyer, who was a professor at the University of Manitoba, wrote an excellent book called The Authoritarians a little over ten years ago that discusses the trends we can see, even in this thread. (You can actually download a pdf copy for free off the U of M website:

While it largely focuses on examining events that had been unfolding in the United States (and rightly predicted the intensification of right-wing extremism), its lessons are just as relevant to the political landscape of Canada. Now more than ever.
I lay odds that the individuals railing against the UN Global Compact for Migration haven't read it either, rather they've been fed selected interpretations on Facebook, Reddit, or other similar echo-chambers. It's just the latest boogeyman in right-wing fear campaign. They don't question it. They defer, and they double-down on it. And when a charismatic authoritative personality emerges in our political landscape that will exploit this, they will fall in, a devoted rank and file. Vindicated at last, and certain their moment has arrived. You need look no further than the Trump phenomenon in the United States to see what happens when one such personality appears.
But it's just a coincidence that this segment of the population will be overwhelmingly conservative, and efforts to harness these people will, without fail, come from right-leaning parties.
This yellow vest protest was just another means of exploiting this same type of person.
