Back in 2005, I sent my birth certificate to the Winnipeg office of Passport Canada as part of the process of acquiring a passport. Over the years I've let my passport status lapse and want to just use an Enhanced I.D. driver's license. The problem is that I need the original birth certificate to get the enhanced license. Does Passport Canada keep the original birth certificate on file indefinitely?

I don’t think passport Canada keeps them.

Or do they?? I don’t have a passport as it’s a clerical nightmare to get all the documents when you have had a couple marriages and name changes. So far I’ve managed without however I have given it some thought about travel lately.
I’m thinking you will need to get a new copy of your birth certificate.

Will probably have to get a new birth certificate from the Vital Stats agency. It will cost you $30 I believe.

The passport office does not keep your birth certificate. It should have been mailed back to you along with your passport.

It would have been returned to you.

If you do not have the new birth certificate you will likely need to just order one instead. My old small birth certificate was denied a few years ago and I have heard of others who have had similar issues
