I just received and update from Kobo on their new "technology". Older Kobo's will not support their upgrade nor is there anything you can buy to add to your existing Kobo.  
 
I am seeing a lot of Kobo's for sale - so just be aware of this.  
 
On the Kobo wesbiste, under "help", I believe here is a list that will still support your Kobo. In saying that it is sometimes hard to figure out what model you have, unless you have the original packaging.

Well the good new is I have lots of Ebooks that I have never read. It's maybe a good thing because it will stop me from buying more books and read the ones I have.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure my Kobo will be listed as older as I can't even remember when I bought it. Really hope I don't have to replace it because I love my little Kobo.

This is the message I got at end of January.  
We have important news for you regarding your Kobo Arc tablet.  
 
Your Kobo Arc tablet requires a mandatory software update by February 28, 2019. To stay aligned with global internet security standards, we are releasing a mandatory software update for all Kobo Arc tablet models. Without this update, your Kobo Arc tablet will no longer be able to exit the setup process after a factory reset is performed.  
 
Rest assured that no items in your Kobo library will be affected: you will continue to have access to all reading material you have purchased or downloaded from Rakuten Kobo.  
 
How to update your tablet's software  
Follow the prompts on your Kobo Arc to install the update before February 28. If you are unable to do this before February 28, you will need to install it manually by following these steps:  
 
Open the Settings app.  
Tap 'About Kobo Arc' at the bottom of the Settings list.  
Tap 'System updates'.  
You should see a 'Check for updates' message.  
Tap 'Check Now' and follow further instructions.  
 
 
Does not look like the device will be inoperable, just a problem if you do a factory reset. Maybe different Kobo's will be affected in other ways. Contact them to find out what happens with yours.

I never got an "update" e-mail. Or new software.  
 
Good to know - thanks.  
 
But, last time they changed something (quite awhile ago), I did have to get a new one, but I complained to the company about not having an update, etc. and they actually sent me a new one.
