I noticed someone set up a tent on the empty lot on 9th & Princess, is that legal. I hope it isn't a homeless person who thinks they are going to start up a tent city like we see in the States.

Is that the land that is owned by Brandon University? I thought they were going to be building in that area soon?  
If it is, maybe they allowed it?  
I read that someone had set one up at one of the community centres a week or two ago in the rink area too.  
From what I know this isn’t allowed, but maybe they’ve been given permission to do so?  
Personally though I do think it matters if they are being set up without permission, so more people don’t try it.  
Maybe they are also just trying to bring awareness to the fact that Brandon needs more low income housing available or shelters to be open year round? Could be so many variables.  
Just my opinion.

It is probably not allowed. But I do feel that a tent on the empty lot is a better solution for someone trying to make the best of what they got.

An answer to homelessness.. I wish I did...but I do know that these people are just trying to survive. It might not be attractive looking but where we we like them to go?

Also, don't assume this is only as thing in the States. Tent cities are everywhere, even Winnipeg.

Can't say if its for-sure related, but i do know that Samaritan House's shelter was to only be open for the season through the end of March. There are efforts underway for shelter to be offered beyond that date but it isn't an overnight process.

Had this been a $30 000 fifth wheel or camper pulled on to this empty lot nobody would have blinked an eye. But since it’s a tent it’s become a big discussion. Let’s no be so judgemental!!

Of course a fifth wheel or camper parked there would result in a big discussion.

I was talking to him and he said the police asked him to move on. He also said he was working in the construction trade and was hoping to get back at it.

I remember a few years ago people posting their outrage about a family tenting in the Canadian Tire parking lot and comments about calling CFS etc.. turned out it was a family whose vehicle broke down while travelling and thankfully some of good people in Brandon helped them on their way. Be good and be kind.

Instead of judging put yourself in their shoes. Would’ve this was your or your child. Or a friend of yours. Think before you judge someone. Not everyone’s a criminal, or drug addict. Some people actually struggle with life difficulties.  
Maybe he has no family to turn too . You never know until u take the time to ask and actually listen.
