Why aren't these stores using their air conditioning? Just went shopping and it was warm in the store! Doesn't make me want to shop there more often in fact I've hardly been lately because I can't stand the lack of cooling. How is everyone else finding these stores for shopping?

Was in Home Depot last night and air was on.

Too bad HD don't sell groceries  
 
The warmer air is bad for produce, no wonder they have fruit flies buzzing about.

If you're talking about Wal-Mart, I remember many years ago there being signs posted saying how they keep the a/c turned up to save energy. I always find it hot in there in the summer, especially on muggy days like today. Not that I think having the a/c on more will help their produce, LOL.  
 
If you're talking about Superstore, it's usually comfortable in there. If it's uncomfortable today, maybe there's an issue.

I was in there this afternoon and compared to outside it felt quite cool and comfortable.

Hasn't really been that hot. I was in 3 stores yesterday and it seemed okay. This is really the first "hot" day, but we barely even hit 30. It will be uncomfortable without A/C if we make it up to 35 plus this summer.  
 
As for the produce in the stores, most of it is in questionable shape even during winter.

Try working inside an ultra air-conditioned building all day. It may be nice for the guests who are running in and out, and get to experience the warm weather outside, but it can be brutal when you're stuck in the cold all day.  
 
Gotta love needing to pair EVERY summer outfit with a sweater. I'll take a little warm vs. cold any day.

I find most of the box stores freezing! Especially Sobeys, they keep it far too cold for me lol

Some of the big box stores may have their temperatures controlled by head office . I know for sure that Walmart's is as I was an employee there . I've also been told it's the same thing at the mall . What I hate is restaurants that are so cold that your food is cold by the time you get it .

Yeah, but for restaurants I can see that. It's HOT in the kitchen, and depending on how the air handling units were designed you can only keep so much cold air from blowing everywhere else. I worked in kitchens for a number of years, and we would die back there in this weather without the a/c cranked. Also, the waitresses are on their feet and moving about. The customers tend to just sit, so yes they will get cold.  
 
And I agree, Sobey's is soooo cold!!

One store I have insider connections to has to keep the a/c fairly high in order to mitigate some of the ridiculous humidity that has been present, of late. It wreaks havoc with the refrigeration systems, particularly open-air coffin freezers. I'm amazed that the biggest box in the whole city would not also be running into this.  
 
Or, it's a corporate decision and they can't see the forest for the trees. AKA the heat:  
 
1.) Is making people less likely to walk around and browse  
 
2.) might indeed be ruining inventory, but this isn't considered  
 
The last one is a guess on my part. But having worked for my fair share of corporate entities, nothing would surprise me.

I agree with the comment about Sobey's being soooo cold, and Safeway too!! I don't like grocery shopping at the best of times and when it's freezing in the store it's even worse.  
As Simonwalcal mentioned above, when a store is cold, people are less likely to browse and that's me for sure - if it's really cold in the store, I'm in and out asap.

Safeway is the worst!! Way too cold all the time
