I was going down a long street in a residential area the other day doing exact 50km which is the speed limit and I was honked at. Really? Maybe I'm a sap but here are rules and I abide by them. Why do I need to be harassed for going what is legal?

So many drivers, so little patience, such poor attention to the rules of the road, alas.

Tired of hearing “it only takes you ten minutes to get across town”.  
 
It takes up to half an hour if you get nothing but redlights, congested left turns, detours, pedestrians and slow drivers. Most of the time you can time the lights and make it through a yellow if it wasn’t for the slow guy ahead of you doing 50. Sometimes I make insanely good time when I do 60. It’s not always like that and I get it but it won’t hurt you to speed your slow ass up a little bit. Sometimes five minutes makes a BIG difference in someone’s life. That’s my opinion, I don’t expect you to go faster or anything when I honk. I more expect you to get out of the way.  
 
Also learn the speed limits. I’ve seen people do 50 in 70’s or 60’s. I’ll honk and they have the same dumbfounded reaction you do.

What makes you think it was your speed they were honking at? Just curious is why I'm asking...

I hear what you are saying about some folks doing considerably less than the speed limit.  
 
However, if you are going to honk at someone doing the speed limit because they are going to make you late, you are a significant part of the problem and need to adjust when you leave.

Hahaha I saw the title and I thought this person was talking about me because I was sure laying on my horn the other day.  
Except I was honking at the person who didn’t look while changing lanes and I just barely managed to stop before crashing with my kids in the backseat. Worst part is they don’t acknowledge their mistake and I have to back up on 18th st. for them to continue on their way. Rant over lol

Rather than get out of your way since you do not own the road, I tend to slow down. You honk I will give you a reason for doing so. This town is so small that there is no way it takes 1/2 hour to get across unless maybe an accident. If it is an emergency call an ambulance otherwise adhere to the rules of the road.

Wow. I live in the southwest corner and work in the downtown area. Even with construction delays it has never taken more than 15 minutes max, at the speed limit. No excuse to honk unless you are alerting someone to a potential accident or they have been texting through a green light. Anger management courses may be beneficial.

why is it when you follow the rules of the road a moron who is distracted by cell, music, food, makeup, curling hair( yes I seen it) actually changing clothes ( yes seem that too) or brats in the back seat start to speed, cut you off, drift across lanes, don't signal, speed etc... you get angry ..Sorry yes its a natural human response. Instead of anger management classes how about common sense classes or actual driving lessons for those that cause these "accidents" or are about too cause one? jus sayin

Last week end my family came for our wedding social from out of province. They all liked the city, except for ONE thing: The drivers!  
 
I also noticed this when I first moved here. I think that people that grew up here are a bit immune or desensitized to it, but Brandon drivers are in a league of their own. And I've lived in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario...of all the cities I've lived in, Brandon is THE most frustrating place to drive in so far.

We were in AB for a couple weeks, it sure was nice and refreshing to drive in Edmonton , where if you want/need to cut in to a lane to make an exit, you signal and 9/10 times the person in the lane you are trying to cut into slowed down or sped up creating a "spot" for you to slip into. I have noticed here that if you do that the person beside you will speed up or slow down in what appears to be an attempt to "block" you from entering that lane.  
the other thing that is annoying is not staying in YOUR lane while turning.... heading S on 26 turning west on Victoria, there seems to be a lot of people that need to get in to the GT/MCD's lot, can't count how many times I was almost hit while I was turning off 26 (heading N to W on Victoria).

Regardless of speed limits people who tailgate are not going to make anyone go faster. It's ridiculous how many people snug up to my car's bumper in a school zone. (By the way, I have literally had people try and pass me in a school zone, this has nothing to do with manners, or old vs young drivers, this is pure reckless inattentive driving.)  
There is no excuse to speed or harass other drivers. If you need to get to the hospital call an ambulance, (yes, I know they cost a great deal of money,) because there is no way you will get medical attention faster if you speed to the hospital. We all have to share the road, a bit of courtesy would be nice.

Also when people compare Winnipeg and Brandon. That we can’t even complain bc of how driving is in Wpg. We are lucky that we don’t have traffic like Winnipeg but that is like comparing apples to oranges. Of course it’s going to take less time to drive places in Brandon but when you’re on Vic and hit EVERY red light!! Drives me crazy! Lol

For the second time in recent memory, I had to use my horn. I was attempting to make a left hand turn onto 18th St, when the lovely OLD lady in front of me decided to not pay attention, and sat though nearly the WHOLE turning signal light.  
 
No matter age, vehicle or experience, EVERYONE needs to pay attention to the road. It would cut down on accidents and frustrations.

I took my mom for a drive to visit some graves of family/friends who had passed on. The so-called gentleman behind us decided we weren't going fast enough, yes, in the CEMETARY, and HONKED at us. Now THAT'S rude.

If some idiot decides to honk at you or get agitated because they're a moron and can't plan there day around a schedule just ignore them and carry on. Nobody owns the road, as long as your following the rules just smile and wave! "Friendly Manitoba" after all.

I have traveled from one side of Brandon to the other. East to west, north to south, and the reverse of both. Outside of when the flood closed all but the 18th st bridge I have never taken more than 20 minutes to get anywhere. Traffic or bad light timing i:ncluded. And considering most areas of Brandon are not 60, I would have to guess you are speeding most of the time. In such a case, if I am doing the speed limit, and you want me to move so you can speed, well, I think I would just slow down even more. Were it a case that I was going below the limit for some reason (assuming conditions were not so poor going the limit was stupid), I would not need honking to get out of the way.

yes it can take you twice as long to get anywhere when the flow of traffic is 40 km/h in both lanes causing you to hit every bloody red light. The lights don't flow here like they should but in the morning when you can actually do the speed limit, its amazing how the traffic actually flows.  
 
If you are scared to drive the speed limit don't drive!!  
 
No I cannot leave home earlier either, i have to wait outside the door of the daycare, run the kids in and have 5-10 mins to bust my butt to work, same as quitting time, i have 10 mins to get to where i need to go. If people drove properly it wouldn't be an issue. Or if you want to drive 10 kms under the limit do it in the proper lane at least so people who can drive properly can go by you in the left lane.  
 
It causes more accidents driving 30-40 because people are angry and will change lanes without looking, speed, etc up to make up time because its infuriating. Not all of us have the luxury of time!

I have driven in all major cities in Canada as well as many large US cities, and I have never encountered such self centered, oblivious and ignorant of rules drivers as in Brandon.  
 
Part of the issue is the poorly timed lights. Thoroughfares like 1st, 18th and Richmond should be timed so that the speed limit enables one to get all the way down the street without hitting every light. Before the city revamped their system, you could get all the way down Rosser or Princess without hitting a red light if you did the speed limit. Now - forget it. To think they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on some report to screw up traffic so badly....add to that the provincial controlling of 18th and Vic...my head hurts just thinking about it.  
 
One thing BC does right - (and I know this system cannot work in MB unless the city crews keep the streets better maintained in winter) is feeder routes all have sensors and cameras so if traffic is flowing smoothly, they do not allow constant interruptions from the feeder routes. Yeah, you might have to wait a bit to get on, but at least it keeps traffic moving.  
 
My guess is the OP was doing more than just the speed limit to elicit the horn. Or the horn honker was just a rude jerk.

Do you have a sticker on your car that says,  
 
"Honk if you are H*rny",  
or  
"Honk if you love Jesus?"  
 
I have the latter. I wave at everyone - even if I am slow or making traffic boo-boos.

If you "change lanes without looking, speed, etc to make up time because it is infuriating", you caused the accident. Period. Yeah, I get frustrated with people who drive to slow, but I don't forget how to drive safely. Does the person going slow contribute, yes, in a small way, but anyone who does not follow the rules of the road is the cause of the accident. Don't believe me? Try and use your argument with Autopac when your in an accident. Ruling will be 100% your fault.

I was once honked at for slowing down and stopping for a yellow light turning red.  
I saw the light turned yellow. Had time to come to a stop without slamming on the brakes. The car behind me was not happy.  
If I had not slowed down for the yellow light, I would have gone through the intersection on a red light!

Age should not be an excuse to impede the flow of traffic.  
 
If you are driving slowly, and blame it on your age, then you need to have your licence revoked.  
 
I believe that MPI needs to be more strict on driver's licences. A re-test every 10 years until you hit 65, and then every 2-5 years after that.  
 
It doesn't take long for the elderly to decline. My own family had to make the decision to revoke my great-grandmother's licence after my uncle almost creamed her in the semi when she ran a red light.

I don't believe they even know or ever knew or cared what some of the rules are. They weave in and out on  
solid lines, make a run for it on amber when you're not supposed to unless you can't safely stop let alone gun it on a red light, don't stop properly at stop signs, park anywhere in any direction to name a few.

So do teenagers who just go their licence, adults that don't know how to manage their time to get to work on time. Every age weaves in and out, etc.

Perhaps you accidentally had your turning signal on, didn’t have your lights on, or have a burnt out light. Maybe you almost missed hitting someone trying to cross the street or a young child looked like they were going to dart into traffic and the driver was trying to warn you.

I honked at the lady who turned left off 15th onto Victoria without stopping, cutting me off in the process. I don't think that was you. ;-)

I don’t believe that driving below the speed limit shows a lack of confidence while driving. Just talking for myself, but last week right around 8 am, I turned off the trans Canada onto 18th and varied my speed so that I did not have to stop once straight through to park avenue where I made a right turn. Braking and accelerating hard uses more gas than continuing moving at a slightly reduced speed. If you are reading the lights ahead, as well as traffic flow, and pedestrian corridors, driving the speed limit at all times will result in you having numerous stops.  
A horn on a automobile is a warning device, don’t think that you are supposed to use it to warn someone you are mad, or impatient.

don't forget all the other idiots that don't know how to drive from 20 to 65 years old  
 
My husband went through a yellow light as I was telling him not too. Cop right there and stopped him. my hubby said I told him not to. The cop didn't give him a ticket just told to listen to his wife and never go through a yellow light again.  
 
All rules of the road apply to everyone. If someone is going 50 that is the correct speed. I don't care where you are going or if you are late. LEAVE EARLIER.  
 
To the mother: if you feel the need to speed change your arrangements instead of breaking the law.

I wasn't disputing who's fault the accident would be, of course the person would be 100% at fault. I try not to do this either. All I was saying is IT HAPPENS and it does.
