Thank you for all the replies, I seem to have lost the discussion on the use of electronic deterrents, some said they work others not so. would be very interested  
to have the name of the manufacturer, at the moment I am trying six Victor Pestchaser at various parts of the house, the jury is still out on whether they will work.

Belzebob is absolutely correct! And they often work better in multiples!  
Also widely available - in addition to the Humane Society, you could also look at the Pound, Funds for Furry Friends, One at a Time Rescue, Strays that Can't Pay, Virden Pet Network, etc!

I agree that a good cat is the best solution but I cannot have one, so looking at alternatives.

I have never used an electronic repeller.  
But the glue boards, poison packs & the spring traps have been very effective.

We used some sort of herbal packet in the past in the trunk of a car. The mouse moved out within the day, nest & all. Not sure to where, but it vacated awfully quick!  
 
The packets are very strong smelling. They would be pleasant if not so strong. You do have to exchange the packets after a few months so that after the scent fades, they don't use it as nesting material. They have essential oils in them, so I am not sure how pet friendly they are.  
 
You can also get a spray as well now. Mice can't make a nest from that.  
 
Peavy Mart has both, at the back of the store by the farm parts/animal traps.

Dollarama has some good mouse traps. I live close to the rain track so i have field mice getting in year round. Just switch them out often as after 2-3 catches it will catch a mouse but leave it alive in the trap. Has given me a few heart attacks in the past to open a trap and have a live mouse still.

Moth balls have a strong unpleasant scent , and they’re cheap. Wonder if that would work?

Moth Balls are full of formaldehyde. I think that I would rather go for the packets/spray which are all natural & safe to boot.
