Hi if you received a robocall from 844-383-5918 this is a scam. If your social insurance number was being used for fraud nobody will contact you over the phone. Please don't fall for this.
Has anybody else gotten a call from this number?

This seems to be *very* active right now. The Police put out the warning last week about fraudsters now pretending to be Police. Impersonation of CRA is also rampant based on user reports I've been getting... I had one tip last week from someone who said they had 25(!!) calls in the same day from at least four different faked 800 numbers.

Also particularly rampant in Winnipeg by the sound of things...

Still think the best way to go is if the telecom companies would allow us to input the numbers of calls we will accept and block anything else.

The solution is rather simple... Never, ever give out personal or financial info over the phone to someone who phoned you, EVER. CRA, banks, police or anyone will never ask for this info over the phone or even in an email.

And since we're talking about it take a few minutes and explain this to love ones or anyone that might be vulnerable to these unoriginal, horribly flawed scams

Your phone might do that. Mine has the option of only accepting calls that are in my contacts.

I believe that carriers are in the process of changing the back end workings of the phone system in order to weed out this unsolicited nonsense (as was mandated by law starting on January 1st, I believe). However, we can expect an explosion of these calls for the next year or so while the scammers try and snag as many fish as they can.

It's like when a vulnerability in a piece of software is exposed. Even if everyone patches their stuff quickly (which people DON'T), the bad guys always make the most of that little period of insecurity in between. Something that is particularly unfortunate in this situation since even people without internet access are vulnerable.
I got a call from "Service Canada" a couple of weeks ago, but my android flagged it as a potential spam caller (thank you Google for that service). Thus I answer and hang up.

They don't even get to my voicemail.
