I hope that you had the opportunity to thank the staff member for being there and doing their job even though they have to put up with unkind and thoughtless behavior of some customers. I also hope that you were able to apologize for the behavior of the other customer and that you were able to say this loud enough for that customer to hear you.  
I don't go out more than I have to, but when I do I try to make a point of personally thanking the people who are working. I'm sure that they must be under a lot of stress.

if they had read the flyer they would have seen that eggs were NOT on sale this weekend! Was the lady just making a scene in the hopes that the cashier would give her a sale price?  
I think very highly of the staff that work at this SDM. They are all great and I wish people would treat them better, not just now but all the time!

I have been yelled at hundreds of times during my career. All of my coworkers have been yelled at hundreds of times during their careers.  
 
NEVER has anyone come back and apologized.  
 
(they feign it if someone else calls them out at the moment and they get embarrassed in public, but you can tell this is bull)  
 
O.P. - the best thing to do at the time is not interject but rather make an offhand remark about the abusive person to someone else loud enough for them to overhear. Not only does this embarrass the person but later the staff will not feel so mistreated if they know someone else agrees it is unacceptable. They might even get a good laugh depending on what you say.
