I was wondering if there is any news on the new school being built right now. Or should I say was being built.

a feeling work won't be starting up again anytime soon with all this COVID-19 going on. Being put on the backburner. Though it would be a nice surprise if I'm wrong.

I thought about covid. But I’ve seen multiple other contractors working at sites around Brandon. I just thought this would take some kind of priority. Over say a townhouse or 4 plex.

Well, construction was halted anyway due to the whole bankruptcy thing. Finding a new contractor to finish the job could only happen once the insurance stuff etc was sorted, and I haven't heard if that's happened.

Ontario has shut down construction for the time being. If our numbers get bad enough, I'm sure we'll follow suit.

I don't expect it's going to be completed/open before Sept 2021 at the earliest at this point. Right now, I'm crossing my fingers the kids can be back in school for September (although I'm doubtful).

They were behind on the school in the first place, the the GC bankruptcy, now the COVID crisis, there is no possible way that school will open in the fall. Government has far more pressing issues at the moment.

“We continue working on a solution to open the new school as soon as possible despite these rare challenges.

In order to protect our investment and minimize risk, the province has taken the responsible step of executing the labour and materials and performance bonds. The surety holder of the bonds is in the process of bringing on a new contractor to complete construction. ”

So say schools do resume in September, and the new school isn’t made till January. Would they make children switch schools half way through the year ?

Looks like they have been in business since 1959 starting in Blumnort, MB. Have offices in Canada and the US. Currently building schools in a few Manitoba First Nations. They also have worked on other major projects. This is the type of company that should of been selected in the first place.

of the plans are that the teachers hired for the new school will be dispersed to the schools that will be feeding Maryland. Every effort will be made to have the children that will be moving to Maryland kept in the same classes at their current schools to make the move as seamless as possible.

Our school moved in the middle of the school when I was in grade 6 (this was in Winnipeg back in the late 80's). Our very large French Immersion school was being split up into 3 separate schools, and my grade was destined to take over another school who's English population was moving and amalgamating into a brand new school in which construction was delayed.

We started the school year in very cramped quarters in our old school, but when moving day came we spent the last few days helping pack up the classroom and having everything ready. Movers came on the weekend and when we arrived at the new school on Monday we spent a couple of days unpacking and getting settled.

I don't remember it being a big deal, we lost maybe a week of school in the process but we also learned lots about moving LOL. I imagine it will be a similar process for moving to Maryland Park if they're going to group kids according to who's going to move - it's easier and less disruptive moving entire classrooms than a few kids from this class and a few kids from that class.

This would've been going back to the 70s before my time, but during Meadows' 50th anniversary last year it was mentioned that the school opened in June... so students would've had almost an entire year at their prev school and transferred just for the last few weeks.
It's going to make for an unorthodox year, but if there's one thing Covid has taught its that we can be adaptable. Hopefully for the sake of all involved Maryland Park ends up going smoothly from here and turns into an interesting story for students to tell a few decades down the road!
