he said that Trudeau was building a temporary 5000 sf mansion on the taxpayers dime at Harrington Lake. For someone who wants to be PM, he has no clue that the Official Residences are owned by the Crown and looked after by the National Capital Commission. The reason why 24 Sussex is in such bad shape is because Harper didn't want to move to another residence so repairs can be done. But Harper benefitted from Stornoway getting many renos done.

Mitch McConnell did not allow Obama's judge appointments to go through, just like Obama's Supreme Court nominee. The claim for not allowing Obama's SC appointee was that it was in an election year. But now, it's a different story being given. Mitch also change the rules from needing 61 votes needed to a simple majority. So since Republican's have 53 Senators, as long as they get 51 Republican's, it's all they need.

But since trump got in, Mitch has been passing through as many conservative judges as fast as he can. And now he will fastrack trump's SC nominee as fast as he can. Trump says he doesn't want Biden packing the courts with liberal judges, yet trump want to pack the courts with conservative judges. In trump and Republican's view, every elected and appointed position should be a conservative. Ideally one loyal to trump.

I don't think that anyone thinks that Trudeau is personally swinging a hammer to build the property but the NCC has committed to spending nearly 18 million dollars of taxpayers money at Harrington Lake. This is under Trudeau's watch so why wouldn't someone say that he is doing it?

How can you criticize Harper for not agreeing to spend over 30 million dollars to restore or replace 24 Sussex?

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Hillary's age was a big issue to Republicans last go round and they weaponized it, and here the Democrats are with an even older ticket this go around (and again, it's being weaponized) . I can't figure out what they're thinking.

It's not that the Democrats are lacking in young, fresh political talent - just the opposite. But I guess they chose who they thought would appeal to disenfranchised Republicans who just might hold their nose and vote blue. Again, appealing those "glory days" of yesteryear that many political conservatives seem nostalgic for.

His entire platform is basically reverting the USA to the 1950's: economically, politically and socially. Sadly, the USA he's created is like a poor copy, and they are going to get left behind as the rest of the world moves forward.

Oddly (but maybe not so...) he hasn't managed to rewind USA's respect and status as a world leader back. They've become the laughing stock. I feel badly for them, especially those who voted for him in good faith last time around.

Just because I question 18 million at one property and 30 million at another does not mean I want our leader living under a bridge in a freezer box. Would just like to believe there is some middle ground.

reason why those residences got so bad is because no one prior wanted to bite the bullet and fund the proper maintenance. They kept passing it on to the next PM, so now we are at this stage where they cost big money to bring back to the way it's suppose to be. If you neglect your home or vehicle for many years and keep putting off repairs, it will cost lots all at once as well.

The Official Residences do not belong to a Prime Minister or Leader of the Opposition, they belong to Canada.
Harper was negligent in not allowing the required maintenance to take place.

This is why Trudeau is living at the Rideau Cottage and not at 24 Sussex.

The trump side is using every dirty trick in the book and even new tricks not in any book to try to win. I respect your opinion but not sure I can follow your logic. You say O-Toole is lying because the Harrington Lake renovation costs are not on Trudeau as it owned by the NCC. However, not spending money on 24 Sussex is all Harper's fault although it is owned by the NCC.

is lying about it being Trudeau's personal mansion when it's not. And all of his followers believed that taxpayers were paying for Trudeau's personal home.

Harper refused to leave 24 Sussex so the NCC can do the renovations.

All O'Toole is doing is following what trump does because many of his followers are also trump supporters. Same tactics, wording and behavior.

As far as the original topic of the thread...
can only hope that not a lot of voters in that country bite on your line of thinking. There is no equivalency here. One candidate is weeks away from, if he gets the outcome he wants, basically ending democracy in said country. The other candidate while definitely not in his prime has enough of his wits to restore decency either directly or through delegating. Folks that are on the partisan train and afraid that country will swing as hard left as it did right over the last 3 1/2 years will I suspect be wrong. There's enough Biden support from Republican-esque figures who know what four more years of the same will mean for country and world. As President, Biden will hopefully respect that in decision-making and know that it's a big part of the path toward undoing the damage done and divisions sewn.

The idea that both candidates suck and so don't bother voting is what got that country in the mess its in today. Here's hoping that folks see through this suppression stuff and know that of all elections, this is one where they can't afford to make no choice at all.

The facts are he specifically said that *some* conservative supporters are also Trump fans/supporters. Which is logical - show me a Liberal/NDP/Green supporter who is also a Trump supporter. Or really anyone who isn't a hardcore conservative who supports him. You'd be hard-pressed.

He also specifically says that O'Toole is adopting plays from the Trump handbook to appeal to that segment of his base. Also logical. They are not an insignificant portion of his base and can't win without them. Although he risks losing moderates and centrists doing that, so a risky strategy because he'll lose without them too.

I tend to be politically centrist but I swing either way, and honestly both sides often spew nonsense, both are prone to conspiracy theories and both can be downright nasty at times. But if you are, in fact, "in the middle", you have to admit that lately the rhetoric coming from right has been beyond the pale and generally indefensible, even within that context. It's made even worse by the fact that there's often outright lies mixed in, and any attempts to show the ridiculousness/incorrectness of their position is met with charges of "fake news" or some asinine QAnon business!

Frustrating to say the least.

A few people here should smell the coffee. The fact is that none of today’s politicians of any stripe have any integrity or honesty. Every one of them is prepared to lie and cheat their way into position and power and they have no interest in the lives of regular working people, business, the environment or anything of importance. They are only interested in their own self preservation. The behaviour of politicians and the media is the reason why there is so little interest in voting.

I get disgusted with all of them sometimes! And when i do I call them Pol-LIE-ticians!

not just the name calling, it's much more.

From my observations conservatives see themselves as the strong Alpha Christian type. The type that love to roll coal with their guns by their side. While viewing if your a liberal, your a weak pansy environmentalist and non-Christian. You drive around in your Prius looking for a safespace.

And that expands in to politics today. Conservatives look at Trudeau as an unemployed pansy Muslim drama teacher, while O'Toole is the strong former military pilot, built himself from nothing Christian.

Same in the US, Trump portrays himself as the ultimate Alpha male while making Biden as the weak liberal pansy.

All you have to do is go to any Facebook page like Wexit, Proud Canada, CBC, CTV and you will see what I said in full display. This just shows how toxic politics have gotten today. And while many of these views existed before social media and Trump, it's just become more acceptable.

Extreme views on either end of the spectrum are harmful but people failing to recognize their own bias is much more detrimental. I have seen people on here from both sides who are clearly blinded by their own bias while insisting they are looking at simply the facts and giving a neutral POV. Own your bias folks. That is the only way to see if, and by how much, it is clouding your judgment. Most of us would probably agree on 80% of issues so the left and the right are probably fighting over 20% of issues.

There is nothing wrong with having a bias, that's a human trait. Far too many will only believe information sources that confirms their bias though. And that's not good. My bias has been tilting to the left recently because I don't like the way the right side is going. But I also do my own research from different sources. In my earlier example with O'Toole, I looked up the Official Residences and found how they are managed.

Absolutely most would agree on 80% of the issues both the right and left have. But it's become so binary in that you can only be on one side. If your on the right but also agree on what the left are saying your a traitor. Seen that many times on conservative Facebook pages/groups. There are things on both the right and left I agree with.

Thanks as always for calling a spade a spade in political threads. We have a small minority of contributors that in these sorts of threads seem more interested in talking in circles, making use of fallacies, changing the topic when focus shifts to questions they know they can’t give a good answer to moreso than participate in debate in good faith. As the world wants to get more and more polarized it’s more important than ever for those like yourself with an objective viewpoint to be part of these exchanges even if it can get frustrating at times!

As far as the whole “they’re all a bunch of liars”... for quite a while for an independent such as myself it seems politics has been as much about voting for who you dislike the least. In the country to the South the guy in the seat right now has taken “lying at all costs to get what you want” to such a different level that it’s almost laughable to see a sympathizer with that guy’s politics try to compare his lying to what you get from your more traditional politician. In that case they’re pushing away moderates/independents like us who might otherwise vote for a “right” politician as much as “left” one.

The concern is that among folks on one “side” of the politically motivated are many who know that by disenchanting independents/moderates from politics, they’re more likely to benefit since the clearly motivated base of people that has many of their viewpoints is in the minority. I’d wager there’s some miscalculation going on in understanding that many of us do in fact still vote even if none of the candidates check every single box... recognizing the impact of not voting and what we’d be contributing to.

Thankfully we haven’t seen it at quite these levels in Canada to this point, try as some politicians and online posters might show a desire to drive some of the same wedges of polarization on a similar script to what we’re seeing to the South.

Is anyone else's head spinning?

All I want as a good ( I try ) Canadian citizen is to vote for a person who reflects integrity, wants to do something good for our country and serve as a solid representation for Canada on the world stage. How the heck can a normal person sift through all the crap and complexities of who is saying what about who, who is lying, manipulating the truth or who is too far right wing, who is too far left wing? Does the average person even understand what is right versus left wing and how that impacts on how a party will govern?

In the end I will vote for the person I hope will do less damage. That is a sad commentary about what is supposed to be a democratic process.

hearing if Biden get elected, the US will turn into some socialist communist country. Or that Trudeau has already turned Canada into a socialist country. And in both cases they say we will be like Venezuela? That's the narrative that conservatives keep saying at least. Anyone know what the heck do they mean? To me the conservatives would love a single conservative leader nation who rules with an iron fist, like Putin, Kim Jong-un, Xi or any of those types. That really seems to be what Trump and the Republicans want. Every elected official, judge a conservative and they are working that way.

Also when you get called a brainwashed liberal sheep by a staunch conservative, aren't they also a brainwashed conservative sheep? The the conservative then tells you that you should believe any on the regular news outlets because they are liberal fake news, while themselves follow only conservative news sources like The Rebel, National Post, The Post Millenial for example. To me, they are brainwash just as much or more. Just asking because those have been said to me on here and Facebook many times.

Sometimes in life you get so fed up that you have to do something that is just not your natural character.
Last municipal election I decide to run, hard to say if the results were lucky or not, but I got in. Still not sure what I can discuss and what I can’t, all that I know is making a difference is a very hard job.
I know at times I can be a jerk, I like to accomplish things, which seems very difficult at times. So a question to anyone who reads this, do I go to the max to represent the ratepayers.
Just curious about what people think, I have already made my decision, and my job is to serve the ratepayers, all ratepayers.

I don't imagine it feels particularly good to be called a brainwashed Liberal sheep especially when it is clear that you have looked at the facts and come to a conclusion based on your beliefs and experiences. It probably feels about as good as being seen as an alpha Christian type who likes to roll coal with his gun by his side especially if I have looked at the available facts and have come to a different conclusion based on my beliefs and experiences. I am sure that no one on either side likes to be lumped in with the extreme examples of our political leanings.

I don't think that a "left" victory will result in a Venezuela type Socialism but I do believe that the line between pure Socialism and a Social Democracy is blurred by some. I am a fan of Democracy and have no desire to have a single leader of any political persuasion who rules unchecked with an iron fist. As such, I don't think, as some have suggested, that a win by a certain candidate down south in November will lead to the end of Democracy. I think there is a lot of fear mongering by folks on both sides.

I have a bias to the right but the reason I feel comfortable saying that bias has not blinded me completely is that I can call BS on either side when I think they are fear mongering or getting carried away. I would never entertain the notion that the left is always wrong or the right is always correct.

Hi Don,

We very much appreciate how hard you're willing to work and do the right thing by taxpayers. I know it can be discouraging but I, for one, can see the difference you're trying to make. Thank you for your efforts even when it seems like you're going against the current.
