Hey Brandon watch out the "fake Revenue Canada" has found a new way reach out to you by using local numbers. It just happened to me!

They also use revenue Canada’s phone number

as someone who works at an accounting firm and deals with CRA on a regular basis, just a reminder that unless you've called CRA and are awaiting a response on something they will NEVER call you to randomly ask you questions.

well thats certainly not true. i received a call from them last week that i definitely was not expecting. however the information they questioned was familiar to me so i was confident that it was legit. they also didnt ask for money so i wasnt concerned.

If you hear noise in the background then it is a scam. I contacted Revenue Canada when i was getting local numbers call me and when I called the number back I was getting the actual owner of the number. They did not realize that someone was using their number to do this. So if you hear any noise in the background then you know it is a scam and when you ask them a questions they will hang up right away.

I would say that background noise would not necessarily be an indicator that the call is a scam. I have called my bank call center and I could definitely hear other conversations in the background. I would think that most call centers are a office cubicle type of arrangement and therefore would not be completely free of noise.  
 
CRA would most likely not be "cold calling" you either. As the other poster mentioned, any calls from them would be in response to some ongoing inquiry or business with them. In the remote possibility that they did call you "out of the blue" or you are not sure of the validity of the person calling you, you can always ask for them to request whatever info they need by mail and they should immediately agree to that, without asking for further info. Of course it goes without saying that you need to make sure your mailing address is correct with them, whenever it changes.

Had a call from them. They did use my name and cell number, so they obviously bought a contact list from someone.  
They said they were calling from service canada. I asked what part of service canada, that threw the caller. Then, of course, they wanted information to "verify identity". I just told them if they are from the government, they already have any info they need about me. Of course, it was followed by threats to suspend my bank accounts. I just started laughing at them and told them to f*** off and not call me again with scam crap.  
Haven't heard anything again in the last 4 months. Nothing happened to my bank accounts or anything else.
