Hi, I’m a new landlord and have a question...If renting to a tenant and they signed a year lease and I need to cancel the lease.. is this permissible?

on why you feel you need to cancel, if it's for non payment of rent, certainly. If you have family moving in, there are stipulations. Go to 'Residential Tenancies Branch' under Landlords, there are regulations listed

There's a very short list of reasons why you are allowed to cancel a lease. Unless its for them damaging the property or not paying rent, you need to give the tenant months of notice about moving out. Definitely check out the tenancy branch website, or give the office a call. And just a heads up, you are legally obligated to renew the lease after the year is up Unless the tenant doesn't want to or for one of the reasons you are allowed to cancel it.
