Why did Keystone get rid of the ushers at Wheat Kings game when they were volunteers and now they have hired ushers who they are paying for 3 hours a game.

I were to guess probably because a lot of people don’t want to work anymore, and when your a volunteer it’s probably hard to fire or tell someone what to do. I would assume alot of people volunteer just to get free entry and then do nothing. This way they can do quality control easier. But this is just my guess, or maybe it’s to hard to find volunteers especially with COVID.

These volunteers have been ushers some for 20 years. They all seem to be doing a good job when I am at the game they keep things in order. I talked to one and he said that the Keystone were doing it now.

Volunteers did a fantastic job.  
 
As to why. Could be anything.  
 
COVID-19 liability if they get sick.  
Stupid people going to game who are violent because you have to be vaccinated  
Job of checking immunization card then match to picture ID  
Having to refuse a person if ID is wrong or fake and dealing with them.  
 
Could be many things.

Volunteers are awesome where needed, if the company can afford to pay people to do it(which the keystone can) then they should do so I think it’s good they are paying people now. However if the previous volunteers were doing a good job why not keep them on and pay them, and then they don’t have to hire and train new people, and the people helping you for free for years get some reward aswell.

I was an usher for almost 10 years. When the Keystone took over the ushers as a paid position, it was not just as an usher. We are expected to work all events held at the Keystone, so tonight we could usher a hockey game, the next we could be working concerts and other events.  
 
As someone mentioned we are getting up in age and we feel that volunteering was a good thing for us without interfering with our pension..  
 
We all miss not being able to work the games and the camaraderie with the fans. I hope I speak for all the volunteer ushers that we miss all the fans.
