What is going on with the potatoes? I am having to cut away so many bad spots or bruises on every potato. If I was buying at a sale price I would not be complaining but I am not.

I also noticed this weeks ago, it’s crazy to think that there isn’t much left of decent potatoes. Went to several places and the potatoes were soft. Might have to start doing winter indoor grows if this keeps up.

I bought one bag of russet potatoes that I had to throw out after using only 5 or 6 potatoes. They had moldy spots and then went rotten in just days. I tried a bag of red ones but they were too bitter to eat. I buy bulk potatoes now but they are expensive and have to watch for them turning green very quickly.

I am sure the heat from last summer has lots to do with this. The quality was not as good as other years. Some of the potatoes I grew last year did not store as well this winter.

The McCain brand PEI grown potatoes sold at Giant Tiger are by far the best quality that I’ve bought in Brandon. I wish potatoes were packaged in paper sacks. I think plastic packaging doesn’t allow them to have proper ventilation & causes them to have a musty smell & flavour & promotes rotting.

The good quality potatoes go to the French fry processors to fulfill contracts while the crap is sold to the public as “table potatoes”.

Need to remember last fall was not ideal conditions for potatoe harvest with all the additional moisture. Could very easily be a reason for the poor quality this year.
