It seems with the infamous merge zone also now leading into a major construction zone we have a new front in trying to establish what happens when the stretch of 18th goes from two lanes to one. The ad banner attached below caught my eye this AM when I was browsing the site as one that was placed through Google's ad system that has many placements throughout the site.

It never fails to surprise me everyday how people will wait in the left lane of 18th backed all the way up to Victoria instead of just merging like you are supposed to.

Its not like budging in line at a theatre. Its courtesy.
Such a huge disservice to the flow of traffic when one lane lines up to Louise Ave! I always take the right lane, regardless of how many are in the left waiting. Someone always lefts me in. If the person on left wants to speed up, I allow them in first.

I've seen that lane lined up as far as Canadian tire. Its insane. I'm one of those right lane users but I am also very cautious merging in because more than once the left person has sped up to pass me before I can complete my merge. I really wish all these folks would learn the rules of the road.

know the rules of the road but are too selfish to follow them.
What it needs is for a police presence to note the drivers not allowing zipper merging, pull them over the other side of the bridge, and give them a ticket for driving without due consideration for other road users.

I know BPS have ticketed people using the right lane as they claim it's a courtesy thing and the people in the left lane done need to let you in... To me it seems like a joke. $175 ticket

Yes 18th street at Rosser (going North onto the bridge) is a zipper merge. There is a sign a few blocks back stating that it is a zipper merge and to use both lanes leading up to it. And just beyond Rosser there is a sign that says to "Merge Here".

Most Brandon drivers just don't use it for some reason and continue to use only the left lane which then piles up for 3-4 blocks depending on the time of day.

Ticket for doing what the sign says? Believe it when I see it, unless there's more to it like cutting into the right lane at the last minute, dangerously flooring it and cutting back in.

FWIW I come up the right lane for a merge at least three times a week on average and have in all types of weather going back a number of years since the new signage went up. I get in on a merge literally every time, having to adapt to the maybe 1 in 10 that go as far as gassing it (at over speed limit) to try to fill the merge-able gap in front of them. Those rare instances are a case for a rear dash cam. When it's that obvious, causing that much unnecessary danger and doing the opposite of what the signage says... that would be the case for the ticket IMO.

it was 100% for merging. had turn signal on. Cop even admitted to the trucking having its light on and the back car slowing down. Officer claimed that merging isn't what is to happen and that it is courtesy to let someone.

I have done the same with all diligence and caution for person on left. I can't see a ticket handed out for doing the right thing .
As you said, this has been in effect for years - posted a few blocks south of the bridge bottle-neck.
