Mosquitos are back and relentless here in the West end. I guess there’s just too much water laying around. Can’t go into my garden with out getting bombarded by them. Just bathe myself in repellent I guess. Shitty summer.

You can get all the stuff and just fog your own yard. Works great and you don’t have to cope with buffer zones!

Does seem to be ramping up again, about on cue for being a couple weeks after some pretty heavy rains (Brandon had a few inches of precip June 13-14 even though we've dodged the worst of a lot of the bigger rain events since then).

Because they can’t fog every week all summer we do need to decide what level of mosquitos we find a way to tolerate as best as we can. What that level is is anyones guess, other than watching the trap counts and seeing if we hit a level that justifies a fog?

Also curious about where the larvaciding program is at. Eg what should our expectations be as far as how much of the population it can keep down, is there opportunity for it to be more effective with more investment/person-power/etc.

Was reading about Winnipeg’s program starting up on early May (link below) with what sounds like a pretty serious effort. How does our program (and our results) compare with what they’re seeing?

Can you be more specific of whats needed to fog. I have a propane fogger but the chemical years ago worked great the new product does not work. Chases them away for 30 minutes that's all. I also wonder what they spray on the water to stop reproducing?

maybe like us you are in a buffer zone?
We are very fed up, cannot work in the yard, cannot sit ouside and read.
Summer is short, we need to enjoy what there is of it!

Reverse this and encourage the person affected to leave for the night, or stay inside, or whatever necessary for their safety

they will fog as needed. But they just fogged late last week. Unfortunately we live in Manitoba where mosquitoes exist, we are having a wet year with lots of water around and heat. So unless the city fogs every night, we are just going have to deal with them as best as we can.

As noted in another related thread the sale and use of many pesticides is regulated by government often making product unavailable to the general public for safety and environmental reasons and to prevent over application.

Other factors…

-cost. Don’t have the exact number at my fingertips, but fogging isn’t free and if done at will there’s a point where it adds up enough that a person would feel it either on property tax bill or in reduction of services elsewhere

-environmental. Fogging does affect desirable insects too.

I’m all for fogging from time to time, but it’s gotta be a balance that tries to avoid unintended consequences elsewhere. I think the system they have in place to trigger fogs tries to help with finding that balance, I just hope that they’re consistent with putting that data out from week to week in the name of transparency so that we can all know where we stand while the data is still relevant. A lot of views on this thread, so obviously a lot of interest in the community on the topic!

Hi Adam,
The province enforced laws that impose restrictions on large scale application of pesticides by governments including municipalities. They require permits that impose the buffer zone requirement. But applicators (government or individuals) must also follow label directions which are enforced by Health Canada, not the province. For example, malathion no longer has a labeled use for wide spread fogging for mosquitos, so can no longer be used as such. The products municipalities use for fogging now are essentially finely sprayed into the air. Combustion foggers like those used by homeowners use different active ingredients that the ones used in larger machines.
The proposed changes to the application of pesticides, specifically herbicides on lawns that you linked to is unrelated to fogging.

Malathion and the propane fogger is available at most hardware stores. If you’re feeling a little more ambitious you could inject it into the exhaust on a mower.

Malathion is not labelled for use in thermal foggers. To do so is illegal.

Malathion is an indiscriminate insecticide and will kill pollinating bees and other friendly insects. I’m pretty sure that it’s also harmful in aquatic environments.
This is exactly why such products need to be regulated and only available to and applied by professionals that follow strict guidelines and adhere to threshold levels.
Misuse and over application of such products can harm human health and harms ecosystems and wildlife. Misuse of such products causes further regulation and the loss of important chemicals that are perfectly safe when applied by professionals that use proper equipment and understand the risks and application threshold limits and the correct use of buffer zones.
Please educate yourself on these important considerations before purchasing, using or disposing of any pesticides or herbicide’s.
A more effective domestic method of control would be to encourage species that predate on mosquitoes, their larvae and other harmful insects.

Classic Farmer George! To be clear I’m not advising what may or may not be legal in a particular situation only what works and the basics of how. I am not a lawyer capable of providing legal counsel.

There’s also other “liquids” available at the hardware store and I’d be willing to bet that even just running diesel through the fogger would be effective.

That is just encouraging irresponsible actions that can harm health and damage the environment with little regard for common sense regulation or other people.

Mosquito trap counts from this past weekend exceeded the established thresholds for proceeding with adult mosquito control. Weather dependent, crews will be moving forward with an overnight fogging program on July 7th after 9 p.m.
